This is why I hate NSG transmissions

Anyone ever overhaul one of these transmissions? Is it one of those that the gears have to be pressed on the shafts, or is it a more conventional assembly method?

Yes, there is a guy who rebuilt one, requires a special tool to assemble. He posted videos.

Anther one is fucked, 4th howls under load, 3rd grinds when down shifting, and 5 and 6th are noisy. Not as bad as fourth. Need to adjust pinion angle on the back and the steering wheel is now a little off, handles great in corners.

Need to figure out the pinion angle, right now at 0.1, maybe tilt down more to .5-1.0 degrees. Don’t think it’s the front, didn’t feel it in the steering wheel. Vibration is significantly higher at 50-55 mph. Right front tire needs balancing too. A few more bugs and maybe I can try highway? Doubt it. Might convert to a 435, bell from Novak is 500 and the tail shaft kit is 600 from AA.

Makes you wonder how they ever built these transmissions in the first place. Sorry. This sucks. What’s your next step?

Call zumbrota and ask? Put on 100 miles, just a dirt road and a 2 lane highway. Did get 11.7 mpg and that’s ok since the roads were in mountains

I would be so f'ing discouraged and pissed. Sorry. That really sucks.

Zumbrota said to send it back, they want to look at it. So I hope that this is the last one. Its not like I can screw this up, is a bolt in replacement with a new clutch and a known atlas that I had in another jeep. Everything worked great up until it didnt.

adjusted driveline angles and got it through emissions and safety inspection. I I am at 1 degree nose down on the rear pinion from driveshaft angle one degree up on the front. I need to go a bit more to get it to stop vibrations at 50-70 mph. `220 miles on this transmission and 3rd syncro definitely has a problem, was only grinding downshifting from 4th, now up from second too, not even fast shifts, just a smooth shift.

Took the rear shaft to 3 degrees at ride height and it has less vibration, at full droop it has 5-6, if I fill the tank, put the back seat in I think it will be right at 2. I am going to pull the front shaft to make sure it’s good. I actually like the way the jeep drives and handles. The Durango calipers will lock up the 33’s if I have to panic stop. The atlas is working great. Almost 220 miles on it. 3rd syncro is toast, so almost there. I want to finish dialing in as much as possible before I yank it again.

Am I right assuming you still have the most recent NSG370 installed?

I did a bit of digging online. I found a couple or three outfits that claim to rebuild NSG370s that I don't recall hearing about them here. Wonder if any of them are any good...

At this point, I don't think I would trust anyone with rebuilding a NSG370. I asked a very reputable trans shop by me, and the owner kind of laughed.
Mine has had a bearing whine and vibration for the past year or so, as much as I like my 6 speed, I think I'll be doing an AX15 swap.

I did find someone on F***book marketplace that has a brand-new factory NSG370 from a 4cylinder TJ. I was thinking about attempting to swap the front case half on. However, $1800.00 is a bit much on a gamble to see if it fits.

Yes William, I see wrecking yard 6 speeds for that price and have yet to gamble that much money and work.
