Hey Everyone,

Hoping someone here has had this issue before. It’s a scratching noise coming from the transmission on my 2006 TJ (NSG 370). The attached video is at idle, but the noise occurs while driving as well, and it does seem to change with engine speed (including revs in neutral).

Quite stumped on this one, I thought it was a pulley until I heard where it was coming from. Thanks in advance for any insight!

There is no video attached, but I will tell you that the NSG370 is one hell of a noisy transmission. Expect the unexpected ;)

The NSG370 is a loud, notchy piece of expensively engineered garbage. They have a few terrible plastic pieces inside, a nonsense shift fork, and nobody respectful rebuilds them. If I were you I’d change the fluid and see what happens. I liked the Purple Synchromesh better than Redline MTL, but some swear by the Redline. I swapped my NSG370 out for a 42rle. Others are swapping for the AX-15, which is a much better transmission. Advance Adapters has the parts for the conversion. Hopefully a fluid change will work. See how much metal is on your drain plug. I believe it takes 2.2qts.

Greatly appreciate the quick replies! I certainly have an AX15 in mind for the future when this one goes, but for now I will see what happens with a fluid change. Not sure why but I’be been unable to upload a video.
