Need Cooling Help for Hemi Swap

Do you know when the Hemi swap was done? Meaning was it in 2005 or at a later date? What year is the Hemi?

It was done in 2005. The Jeep is a 2005, and if I recall, AEV used engines off of the assembly line, so it should be a 2005 intended for a Ram truck, but got diverted. That's how the purchase process was with AEV. I spec'd out this Jeep for my buddy. AEV didn't treat it as a swap, as far as the consumer was concerned, it was an option when you ordered a vehicle from them.

OK I wasn't sure if it was done as a New rig or had been taken to them & had the swap done at a later time. There are some things you can do performance wise to help out some.

1) Lose the crossover plug wires. There are kits for your wiring that will convert it to the 06-08 Hemi coil packs.
2) 185* thermostat But if you do this you HAVE to have a tune written for your PCM that flashes it for the 185* thermostat.
3) Swap pre-Eagle heads for Eagle heads. 09 & newer 5.7 heads are called Eagle heads and out flow the earlier versions.
4) Cam swap If you're doing the heads now is the time to do the cam & lifters also.

Excellent! I was already planning to research performance upgrades, this is a great head start! Thank you!

FRP has a nice Eagle head swap kit that includes the cam. You want the Hellfire 2.0 cam for a non-VVT engine. And then you need to delete the MDS if you have them on your engine.

https://frptuning.com/collections/f...aft-kits-03-08-5-7-6-1?variant=48921114771758

216/226 111+4 "Hellfire 2.0" . Looking for maximum torque, sound and power out of your 5.7 truck or car using a stock torque converter? The new Hellfire 2.0 is for you. This cam works great for towing, daily driving and even mild boosted applications while also delivering a choppy sound we all want in an aftermarket cam.

Custom tuning is required, is a separate cost and is not included in the kit.

Custom Grind FRP Camshaft
OEM NON MDS "Hellcat" Lifters
MDS Plugs
PAC or PSI Valve Springs
Cometic Head Gaskets
Felpro Headbolts
Non VVT Cam Bolt
Crank Bolt
Timing Cover Gasket Kit
Valve Cover Gasket Kit
Intake Gasket
Water Pump Gasket
And then you need the adapter plates from MMX to use your 05 intake.

When I'd bought the donor Jeep the seller thought it was a newer Hemi but when I'd gotten it home I'd found out it was a 03 Hemi.. So I did the eagle head swap along with the other parts from FRP. I was the 1st person to purchase this new kit from him. The other thing I did was the larger throttle body from MMX. And then or course I have a custom tune on my engine from FRP using a HPT tuner.

Excellent! What were the results after all of the mods? Read up a little bit on the coil pack update, and it seems as though that one is almost a necessity (admittedly being dramatic) with regard to reliability.

I'd only driven the donor rig onto my trailer and then into my garage when I got it home so I really can't say what it was like power wise prior to any of my mods to the engine. The 03-05 heads have a reported issue with dropping valve seats on occasion so I didn't want to take the chance of that happening which was part of the driving thought to the newer heads. Then on top of that the newer heads flow more CFM than the earlier ones. That then includes better flowing exhaust due to larger ports. And the newer cam allows it to breathe better too. I'm using Holley Blackheart Grand Cherokee headers on top of it.

Here's the old 03 heads on the right and the newer Eagle heads on the left.

Then I'd built my own Y-pipe with cats. Headers are on the right. And it's all stainless steel. Then had it all ceramic coated. But it's still HOT..

I'm running an Art Carr (Winters) shifter instead of the stock TJ shifter. This was partly due to running a GenRight center console.

My trip to AZ to pickup the Donor Jeep was a fun trip too. I'd just had to have the 6.4 Powerstroke engine rebuilt in my motorhome so this was also the break-in of the new engine... Trip was great and it towed the Jeep with no issues. Granted my TJ is a little more porky then a stock TJ.

....especially to your wife.

😳

Hell I'm single but still don't want to tell myself what I've got wrapped (wasted) into my rig... After 3 engines and 3 transmissions plus all the other things I've done...

Gotta love the red rocks!

It was a fun trip but just a quick down and back....

How soon before you're bringing the LJ home? Are you doing the repairs or is it being handled at a shop?

It will be at my home after it gets out of the shop, but the actual transaction will ahve to wait until I sell my TJ, which I won't do until after my deer hunt next weekend, it's my primary hunting rig! LOL! Not sure how long it will take to sell, but the owner of the Unlimited isn't in a rush, and isn't marketing it, so I have time on my side.

What all is getting fixed by the shop?

Good luck on the hunting trip.

Getting a once over inspection, going through all fluids, etc.

Repairs that are needed:

  • Radiator leak (hence this thread)
  • A/C condenser is getting replaced due to a leak
  • Track bar heim is blown out, so replacing that. I wanted to wait until I did the suspension, but when the heim blew on my TJ, the track bar literally was disconnected from the frame side. I didn't want this one to get that bad.
  • Front pinion seal....again, I want to re-gear, but I don't know if that will be in a month or a year, so.....

So the shop is going to replace the radiator? Don't want to just assume... And also is going to attempt the mechanical fan swap?

Good time to be replacing the radiator...

When the one on my TJ froze up I had death wobble.... Had a hell of a time getting that old heim off that trackbar too...

Figure out your MAX tire size first... I thought I'd never go above 35" tires... Now I'm running 38" tires and LOVE them... Don't know I'll ever make it to 40's or not.
