This is why I hate NSG transmissions

Transmission was out in 1.5 hours, almost crazy how I know how this thing goes, every wire, nut and bolt! Going back in will be about 3 hours.

This really sucks to keep reading about their failures. Hope you aren’t really defeated. You haven’t failed. I’ve rolled my rig twice now and I know I feel defeated, but I’m getting up and shaking the dust off and trying to move forward. You got this. Move on to the next transmission.

Yeah, I will get it the next time. Still need to wire the lockers, order a tom wood shaft, and hopefully it’s drivable.

Got a notification that transmission arrived Friday evening, I had other plans so I will get it Tuesday

I have been wondering what High Impact is thinking/saying about all these faulty rebuilds/remanufactures? Like, they have to be getting tired of going through this. Or they have to be terribly apologetic. Do you have anything to share about what’s going on there?

You'd think huh? Egg on their face multiple times? Doesn't make sense...

Well this weekend will be a good one. Once installed I can install a new woody shaft.

Lucky for you they are covering it under warranty. Being that zumbrota is taking over High Impact Gear, I would expect that there is going to be a big increase in pricing.

5th one is in, no clanking in the 1/4 mile I drove it, 2.3 hours to install, still have to button it up and get a front shaft.

It's truly a shame when we are all excited for you , that the 5th Mercedes transmission didn't grenade after 1/4 mile.
Hate is too kind a word for nsg reliability. I hope you are able to put this all behind you for good !

Front Shaft will be done Monday, stopped by tom woods Friday, they went up about $80 from last year when I got the rear. Seems to work, the sliders were not exactly what I wanted but they were the right price. I went over a 36” embankment and it rode great. Once I get it on the road and work out a few bugs, should be done. 6 years later.

It’s been over 50 years since I was working in the truck shop, but then it was very common to pull a drain plug from a rear axle or gear box and it looked like that. Much more common than pulling one that was relatively chip free. If it was chip free, it had probably been drained or repaired very recently.

As far as grinding shifts go, if that’s all that’s wrong with the gear box, just give it time for the gear speeds to match before completing the shift. When you pull the lever to neutral, and in position for the next gear, feel with ever so light pressure until it drops into gear quietly. A little practice shifting it as if it’s a non synchronized gearbox,(which it is on that shift) and you can drive it a few hundred thousand more miles.

Anyone ever overhaul one of these transmissions? Is it one of those that the gears have to be pressed on the shafts, or is it a more conventional assembly method?
