I took the tire off and found that the cable keeps popping off. Any suggestions? Not sure if something else needs adjusting to help it stay in place . Pictures attached

It looks like the actuator lever may have opened allowing the cable end to pop off, hard to tell. You should probably pull the assembly apart and inspect. New brake cables would not hurt either.

Pick up a gallon of Evapo-Rust and give everything a good soak.

The "actuator" for lack of a better word (what the cable hooks to) moves the brake shoes.
On mine both sides were rusted and seized to where they wouldn't move properly.
I freed them up and lubricated them, along with new hardware, adjusters, and shows. Works like a champ now.

Is there a difference between the left and right cables? I was going to go ahead and replace them since there’s so much rust but only saw cables listed as “right” side.

Advance Auto shows them to be left or right and it makes sense that they are the same as the junction is in the middle of the tub.
