Hey everyone I have a 2000 jeep wrangler 4.0 sport with no ABS (not sure if ABS makes a difference or not on this issue) and I'm having issues with the rear drum self adjusters I have rebuilt the rear drums on my wrangler around a year and a half ago and thought everything was right on it cause I put it back together the same way I took it apart and everything looked the exact same as the pictures I took but one part always stumped me and it was the self adjusters when I look at pictures of the rear drum online the adjusters always sit level but not mine they are tilted downwards and now I'm having issues with them digging into the drums what could cause them to do this? Could it be the park brake? Did I get the wrong cable for the self adjusters? Is something bent into the wrong area? Any info helps thanks!

And I'm trying to fix this cause I'm running mostly on front brakes due to this issue!

Pics will help.

Are you referring to the actual pawl that pushes on the screw adjuster (expanding the shoes apart)? Some versions of that have a weird design with a section that does possibly contact the brake drum. It's okay to grind it down.

I'm talking about the dog-leg pawl at the bottom of the brake assembly.

And if your pawl does not contact the adjuster, put a twist or two on the cable before you assemble it.

This is the correct way to attach the self-adjuster spring assembly to the adjuster lever. It is NOT obvious, but this is the ONLY orientation that works, anything else is a fail!

Also if anyone has info on the park brake adjusters and where its supposed to be set please let me know i believe the previous owner has messed with the adjustment nut on the park brake cable so its too tight thank you for any info!

With that adjuster cable, as well as orienting it properly on the lever, you need to make sure the dimple on the rear of the adjuster guide is seated properly in the hole in the shoe when the spring is fitted. If it isn't the guide plate won't be sat fully flat against the shoe and the cable will be too slack.

When the drums are refitted and the adjusters wound up so the brakes just start to drag, pull up the hand brake lever. It should be fully applied on about 4 clicks. If it comes up further, the cable can be adjusted at the balancer under the center of the Jeep.
