It's like a dry steering test but with more foreplay.
My preference is to refer to it as a power steering test and done so with the engine running since that tends to impart more force to parts that are worn enough to be a problem but not worn enough to show up with the engine off. We do it by rapidly cycling the steering wheel back and forth to the limit where you just start to feel some resistance or the tires start to move. Bounce back and forth between those quickly while someone with good light is touching and watch all the bits for movement that shouldn't be there.
