How important are fender liners?

I replaced my stock plastic fender flares with flat metal aftermarket fender flares. I removed the inner fender liners from the rear wheel wells. There were no liners in the front. I'm now deciding whether I should put the rear liners back in and get front liners too. I can see some possible advantages to replacing the liners for sound reduction and protecting from rocks kicking up, but I'm inclined to just leave them off if they're not providing any meaningful protection. How important are fender liners on Jeep TJs? Looking at pics, it seems like some people leave them off

If you can keep them I see no reason to take them off. Taking them off isn’t that big of a deal though. I took mine out because of high lining the fenders. With the rear liners out you’ll hear the rocks hit tub making a loud noise and the rock chips the paint. It’s not often that a rock hit is loud enough to actually take my attention but once in a while running through the desert my passengers in the rear hear it and get concerned for a sec. I paint the wells black now so I can easy touch up.

I definitely noticed the rocks kicking up more. I ordered some new retainer clips in case I decide to put them back in. There was a lot of dirt trapped behind the liners and the body, but that might have been accumulated over the last 27 years.
 
My inner liners are off... planning on painting the inside... thinking of something like raptor or lizard. More than just paint.

Any efficacy to sealing off the two rectangular... what are those... torque tubes? Maybe a 3d printed intsert or some heavy stall mat cut to fit?

I took mine out and Raptor Lined the entire underside, and inside, of my tub.
Looks better with them removed, in my opinion. Maybe because of my Savvy body lift. It just seems a bit more aesthetically pleasing, without the liners.
I cut the liners up and made “caps” for the torque tube area, and the rear open areas, so nothing/minimal would kick up into the gas filler and NVLD setup. Works well enough, I suppose.

I would be concerned about trapping moisture in the torque boxes. It is a known rust-prone area and doesn’t need any encouragement. I usually spray a jet of water down the torque boxes to clear any debris when washing.

The only benefit of the rear inner liners is to dampen road noise and trap debris that will cause rust issues.
