Dual Purpose Tires

From what I've seen of them, they do great. Granted, the ones I've seen perform were stickies and not DOT.

This has gotten wildly off the original topic 😆.

Derailed threads is a norm around here....

I can't help on your tire choices. I think I'd stick with a 35" tire if you can. What events are requiring a 37" tire?

If I was going for a tire that spends most of it's time offroad I would want something with tough sidewalls and doesn't rip chunks off the tread too easily. Buying them from a place with a no questions asked hazard warranty would be worth it the first time something sharp goes through the sidewall too.

Do you drive in snow/ice? Maybe you want something with a good rep in those conditions vs some of the poor performing mud tires

All of my tires get bought from a friend who owns and operates an off road shop. I'd say my TJ is spending 50/50 on road and trails now.

We do get some snow on southern Indiana, but the amounts have decreased over the years (I appreciate global warming, I hate cold weather). It's been 10+ years since we've gotten more than 6" at once (that's what she said). We get 1-4" here and there a year.

Most organized rides for some trails are requiring 37's. I'm fairly certain I can get in with 35's on most.

I'm pretty sure I'm sold on 35's. Now it is the tire.

I'd seriously look at the M/T Boss then. Yes they cost more but do the last longer and work better? Balance better and so on?

I used to run the 35X13.5x15 Toyo M/T's and swore by them. But there are better tires out now than when I last ran a street rig on a M/T tire.

I'm looking at moving to a 35" tire and would like to have something that can be a dual purpose tire; off-road (trail & rocks) and something that will do good on the street. My TJ is quickly becoming less of a daily and more of a frequently drive on the street, but more drive on the trail. I have been going back and forth on the tires below.

Mickey Thompson Baja Boss MT
Cooper STT Pro
Thunderer Trac Grip MT Tires

I currently have 33" Baja Boss AT's and love them. They are awesome on road and have performed better than expected on the trail.

I know several who are running the STT Pro's with very good opinions on them. They seem to do well all around. They don't seem to be loud on the road. I'm a big fan of Cooper tires as well as their other brands.

We have a set of the Thunderer Trac's on a F-350 brush truck at the VFD. They have done well off road and seem to not be very loud on the highway. Obviously, a brush truck doesn't get driven much when it rains. We do use it when it snows for other things and it does well. There are only around 4,000 miles on them and they still look new.

Cost is somewhat of a factor. I can get 5 Cooper's for $2,400 or 5 Thunderer's for $1,065.

What are your thoughts. I know opinions are like butt holes, but some of you I value what you think.

I still love the STT Pro’s I had back when I was on 33’s. They’re the top of my list. I would go back but they are so darn expensive.

These are the tires I’ve tried on the Jeep.

Cooper AT2
Maxxis Razr
BFG KM3

I’m on my second set off the STT’s. First set was 32’s now I’m on 35’s. They do good in the mud and rocks. They also are good on the road. My Jeep is a trail/summer toy so I don’t put a ton of miles on it a year, it gets stored all winter. The 32’s I did run in the winter and they did really good in the snow too.

The 35’s are now about 5 years old, still have great tread, I do have some chucks missing from rocks but they still go down the road good. I air them down to 8psi when I crawl, never lost and bead and haven't cut a tire yet. Think I jinxed myself there.

They are an all around great tire in my opinion.

I am having good luck with the Mickey Thompson Baja Legend MTZ 35x12.50x15. They have good road manners (they all balanced out with less than 4 oz of weight) and have performed great for me on rocks aired down to 8 psi on non-bead lock 15x8 wheels. MT is one of the few still making a 35in tire for a 15 in wheel. Your wheel size may dictate what you can buy if you are on 15 in wheels.
