Wrangler TJ EV Conversion

The Volvo P/S unit is available on ebay for around $300. It's almost plug and play. Did I mention it's made by Fo-Mo-Co, they've had a very long relationship apparently, who knew...

Anyway, yes, you need to braze the stock nuckly plumbing to two new connectors for the pump, add a 60amp fuse and a 1 wire Enable switch that can be attached to a relay to your key-ON switch. Honestly, it'll take you longer to rig up the mounting bracket and remove all the stock P/S stuff on the motor then it will to hook the 'new' P/S pump up.

The reason it's such a good swap candidate is it's a self contained unit - the pump and reservoir are in the same unit. You get an immediate ~12-18% hp added back to the ICE motor from the vane pump being removed.

Here's one that's on our demo CJ:

Yes, we love our label maker....

Okay, back to work, those Jeeps won't wire themselves!

Patrick - Thanks so much for taking the time to share these builds with us. It's fascinating and very interesting. Looking forward to following along.

I looked into using one of these and I think I remember that it took CAN inputs from the original vehicle to run optimally. Did you create some CAN controller that adjusts pressure as speed changes or do you have it run at the failsafe power with no CAN input?

What models and year range are you getting them from?

I wonder what their operating pressure is

Just type this into the ebay search: volvo power steering 2005-2013 - that'll get you to them.

The reason they are plug-n-play is they have a limp-home mode that is perfect for every day driving.

The pressure is variable, there's a guy that makes a connector so you can adjust the pressure. Pretty fun project.

Kinda' already answered this: the default is the limp-home mode and it works perfectly for the stock-ish Jeeps we convert.

YES, you can go the full CAN control and there's a bunch written about it but for the most part, totally unnecessary for a simple conversion / upgrade (ICE or EV). 1 wire enable and it's on.

There's one trick you'll need to know about the wiring of the power side. Not worth mentioning here unless anyone cares.

....I just checked ebay in response to another post on here - $175 for the unit!!!

In Jeep terms, that's practically $$free!

Welcome to Friday TJ Conversion Confessions!

Something like that anyway...

We usually build by putting the Front Battery Box along the fire wall but in this case, due to the RHD nature of this beast, I would forced to redesign such that the Battery Box now runs from Firewall to Grill with the Tech Box right next to it instead of right in front of it.

So be it,

Here's a picture of the OBC Combo component after being bolted to outside of the Tech Box:

It's rated IP67 so I'm not worried about that in the engine bay.

My goal over this weekend is to stuff the following into that Tech Box:
- OBC Combo unit (outside, attached)
- Inverter
- 3-pos Receptacle to feed the AC Dana Motor
- 2-pos Receptacle that's bringing in the HV DC from the Back Battery Box and the Front Battery Box
- BMS
- GigaVac Sw. - a master switch instead of a MSD (Master Service Disconnect) given how it's a fleet vehicle, they will be using the Sw. more often)
- LV-JB by Hawkeye - this is the wire hook up for many of the 12v stuff
- Start of HV and LV fuse boxes
- Start of DTM-12 pin keyed flange mounts for egress of some wiring.
- Super small but awfully cute baby pumpkins to give the cab that holiday smell.

Side view how the boxes look, I'm pretty happy with how it's comming along:

Shiny.

I'll try to post progress over the weekend.

Damn, Patrick, there’s enough room to high line that bad boy.

One of my design philosophies is do no harm, if possible.

Thus, we try not to cut, weld, touch the firewall or fenders or tub. Many (all, no kidding) DIY and pro-conversion companies are fearless when it comes to a new sawzall blade and drilling. If at all possible, we try to make everything self supporting and factory bolted down.

That way, if you feel the urge to go from 33x10.50 to larger, you can cut those fenders to your hearts content and not have to worry much about moving EV stuff around.

We are all Jeep thinkers and makers so I keep that front of mind with every bit of design work I put into the conversions.

Feel free to chop-baby-chop, but I'll leave it to you.

Alright, back to work, what's this red wire for again, I know it goes to something....

It's just so fun to drive, it's as magical a feeling to be in an almost silent Jeep, cruising down any road, street or trail, just you, your thoughts and a magic Jeep.

But, I'm waxing on....

When my 4.0 eventually dies, I hope an electric motor swap is a viable option. The quiet is very appealing. And from what we are seeing, the possibility of the swap not interfering with the suspension is exciting.

Assuming it has enough power to go uphill at highway speeds I’d think seriously about it!
