Interview with former GM engineer on the general degeneration of the modern auto industry

You could always use a splitter - but I hear you.

Yep, that's the only reason I picked the 700R4 over the TH400.

But we can both agree that hydraulically controlled transmissions like this are a lot easier for the home mechanic versus one of these modern day, electronically controlled 10+ speeds.

Hell, a new transmission for my F150 is around $7000 for parts and labor. And that's pretty much the going price, since again, they won't rebuild them.

The conversion kit fixes that...

There's also a 4L85E that's rated for higher horsepower, but it's very uncommon.

I know, I was just giving you crap. Some of us folks get scared just at the mention of "electronics".

Who am I to talk though, as I mentioned above, I actually really dig the Holley Sniper EFI.

Fuel injection is a nice thing to have. Just gotta make sure to wrap the little ECU in a mini faraday cage ;)

Injection is nice,
But I'd rather be blown...

Stop it! Now you're scaring lBasket  (carbs scare him)

They scare me too. I've never once owned a vehicle with carbs that didn't give me issue-after-issue in regard to starting.

I didn't grow up with carbs though so I may not have the magic touch.

FWIW I never used ethanol gasoline in them either.

Reading all these replies I am beginning to wonder why I take any tools when we go off-reading with the JK’s 😂. Of course I was able to fix my son’s 07 not shifting out of 4-low. The LJ I probably could MacGyver something up 😁. It’s a lot simpler to work on.

That's one of the points that was made in the interview, that the makers are moving more to a lease model as there is more money for them to be made there.

Absolutely

In case you haven't noticed (which I'm sure you have), nearly everything is going subscription based. Even my Adobe membership (so that I can use tools like Photoshop, Premier, Illustrator, etc.) is subscription based.

Like you said, more money to be made there.

Some people are okay with that but not me.

Sometimes "progress" isn't a good thing. Much of the "progress" these days is anything but.

I'm not a man given to using vulgarities freely, but that is some stupid sh1t! 🤬

I' getting real close to just spending my car money on a few good mules and a pack donkey.

I always tell my friends, "At some point I may just make the switch back to a horse and buggy."

I've long thought that my perfect engine / transmission setup would be a Chevy 350 small block with a Holly Sniper EFI (just to make starting easier) paired to a 700R4 transmission.

The only real electronics you'd have would be that Sniper EFI, but it's very basic compared to modern fuel injection systems.

The reason for FI to me isn't for starting , it's for the crappy gasohol that vapor locks a carb. I love the SBC 350 and the only thing I would do differently is a TKO 5 spd. manual . If I had to go auto trans it would be a T-400 and a Gear Vendor overdrive. I realize it has higher horsepower losses than newer trans , but the reliability is worth it to me.

Yeah, I'm with you on that one as well. The gas is so crappy these days (and ethanol free isn't available in many places) that FI makes a lot of sense. The Holley Sniper EFI is very simple as well. Reminds me of the original FI systems (direct port) that we used to see back in the early says of FI.

I wasn't even thinking about manuals, but if I'm being honest I'd rather have a manual anyways, so I'm with you 100%.

There are few things I love more than a SBC 350 (especially when it's a 396 stroker)!

Yep, I remember you talking about this with the stroker builds.

I'm not surprised either. There used to be a lot more machine shops that did good work. Sadly, that too is a trade that has largely been forgotten.

This is about Billy Klapper, an old craftsman who made spurs and bits, but it seems that the same principle applies to pretty much all craftsmen that we knew in the past...

"When he's gone we're all out of legends, with nobody trying to be the next one."
