What other projects are you working on?

Do you think some of the improvement is just from not going up and down hills like you do out here?

That's heading east, so not in this case. But hills and daily driving being short aren't great since the engine isn't running as efficiently as it can not fully warmed up

I've always found that to be negligible and that I get better MPGs at lower elevations. There's a noticeable improvement in engine performance with more oxygen that offsets any aerodynamic benefits.

On our most recent road trip the range went from ~360 miles to ~440+ as we got closer to sea level for the same vehicle.

The performance improvement from more oxygen doesn't affect the mixture though (unless you're spending a lot of time in open loop), so it's just letting you burn more fuel because you can get more air.

I suspect the less aerodynamic a vehicle is, the larger impact the air density is likely to be on fuel efficiency. My 3 different TJs consistently have done ~3mpg better in Colorado than here at 1200' based on regular use of the 99 and 06 in Colorado Springs for 4 years and the 05 and 06 in OKC and Tulsa for 6 years with 1-2 wheeling trips per year back to SW CO. The difference is much less noticeable, if at all, in our 4runner, which has seen the same usage. Maybe 1mpg which isn't enough to be certain. Especially the way my wife drives!

At any rate, the point stands that octane and mpg are unrelated. The octane rating of a fuel is simply the percentage of octane in an octane-heptane mixture that has equal resistance to preignition as the fuel being tested. It doesn't correspond to any other property or characteristic of the composition whatsoever beyond anti-knock.

If I'm working on anything else, it's usually one of the bikes.
These days are no exception as I just added footboard extenders, a touch of chrome, & a F/R DVR system to the 2014...

And tonight I installed an amber inner shield for my helmet!

The outer visor is photochromic w/ a pinlock anti-fog insert.
This combo can't be beat when it comes to covering bright sun and bright headlights in the same helmet.

No. Octane rating is solely to resist pre-ignition, has no impact on the fuels energy content.

I usually get better mpg with 85, but not because of the fuel, it's because if I'm using 85 I'm at ~5000 feet or higher and the air density reduces the aero drag.

Thanks, super interesting.

Looks like I'm getting an opportunity to learn something new, haha.

Trim bid came in a bit higher than I had budgeted so I'm gonna let him do the base and the tedious stuff like door and window casing and closet shelving and I'm gonna do the extras. Wife wants wainscoting in the big room and a board and batten look in the bedroom and bathroom, which right or wrong seems less intimidating to me than doing craftsman style casing or shelving out a closet. And it's gonna save me $2500 minus a new finish nailer.

At least it'll all be painted so I can cover my mistakes. 🤣

Finished out the trim (the parts I was doing) this weekend. Painters are here caulking right now. :ROFLMAO:

My 10 year old assembled the vanity completely solo.

Mixing and matching styles a bit here with the base cap/panel molding/chair rail combined with craftsman casings but happy wife, happy life as they say.

The bookcase built-in is actually the doorway into the bed/bath.

Also got it tied into HVAC so it's officially conditioned space. Paint will be done this week, I'll finish out electrical over the weekend and carpet and final plumbing will be here Monday, leaving me 3 days to install the shower door and find somebody to run the bathroom vent fan out through the wall because I'm not going 20' up the side of my house on a ladder.

Oh, and we overfilled the 20 yard rolloff so I'm gonna have to take stuff back out of it before they'll pick it up. If we'd just stuck to construction debris it would have been fine but we tried to sneak some stuff in there that we'll otherwise have to pay by the pickup load to take to the dump.

Looks good you're making good progress! How much is a pickupload to the dump over by you?

Good news. I managed to get it pretty much flat to the top (other than 30 year old torn up sofa) by taking out all the cardboard boxes that various things had come in and weren't broken down. Those all fit in my pickup and can be dropped off for free as long as nobody checks my ID and sees I live outside the city.

When I have a pile of boxes like that I just put them in the shed and cut them up and slowly fill remaining space in my bin on trash day til they're gone 🤣
