What do you enjoy about getting old?

I've been really big into jazz for the past 10 years or so. Ever since I discovered it I can't get enough. I like all sorts, but my favorite is smooth jazz. I've got quite the playlist going on Apple Music.

I'm eclectic with music though. The only genres I can't bring myself to enjoy are death metal, rap, and modern pop music.

I'm a Jazz fan too. I have Apple Music as well, I wonder if there is a way to share. I have about 6,000 Jazz tracks and around 600 Jazz CD's that have only been played once, to rip. My preference is Bop and Post Bop, not exactly smooth I know. I used to keep extra copies of "Kind of Blue" on hand to give away, listening to that album can have a profound effect on your life. And I mean listen, not playing in the background while you do something else. A good sound system with a listening triangle is worth every penny. IMO the best Jazz came from about 1956 give or take a few years on either side. Miles Davis, Brubeck, Monk, Dexter Gordon, Coltrane to name a few of the big ones. Also big into the Latin and Bossa Nova sounds. We need to get together and compare notes.
My Jazz journey was a progression from Rock to Country to Blues, then I received a gift subscription to XM radio maybe 30 years ago and got hooked on the Jazz scene. So now I listen to all of it.

I like all sorts of Jazz, including the Bop stuff.

My path started with Blues (I'm a Blues guitarist) and then shifted towards Jazz, and then Country.

I'm very big into the Latin and Bossa Nova sounds as well. Sounds like we should be comparing stuff. If you make a playlist on Apple Music it can easily be shared on Apple Music with the whole world. That's what I'm planning to do. I've got so much stuff I've compiled and most of it is really good. There's a lot of classic stuff in there (Joe Pass, Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery, etc.), but I've also got a lot of newer stuff from lesser known artists I really had to dig to find!

There's nothing quite like good Jazz!

Check out the album "Swiss Movement" recorded live at Montreux in 1969, and check out Andrea Motis.

Relationships matter more and more. People. All the BS that the world throws at me is becoming less and less meaningful.

Where I live - a small mountain village in NW Mexico - the culture is still mostly centered around people and relationships. Neighbors don't mind if you drop in without calling ahead. There will most always be a cup of coffee and some cookies. You sit and talk. I love this.

I enjoy watching my kids get older. I have 3 boys: 11, 14, 16. They get more independent as they get older. The teens haven't decided that mom and dad are evil (yet). My wife and I realize that we're quickly getting closer to when the kids will be going to college (hopefully) and moving out. So trying to enjoy the moments while we can.

I find myself living in the moment more and appreciating what is happening around me. It's ok to think about the future, but regret isn't as useful. Regret is fine if a similar situation will possibly happen. Regretting things you can't change is just a waste of time. Think more about experiences and will I regret missing out on something, get motivated to do something now.

Funny that there's a side conversation regarding Jazz. I've also found myself getting sick of the same rock music that I've been listening to since the 80's and 90's. I used to have music on at work most of the time. Have since stopped listening at work because when I get sick of something, I can't listen to it for many years. I'm still pretty new to Jazz. I'll put on Pandor and select the Dexter Gordon playlist. I subscribe to Sirius and will put it on Real Jazz or Smooth Jazz. Wife isn't into Jazz much unless it's live. So I'll put it on Country when we're in her car.

I feel like Country is now less 'country' and closer to top 40. I don't mind it in small doses, just don't find myself listening to it on my own.

I'm only 42 years old, but my wife (who is 8 years younger than I am) is always ribbing me about how I'm becoming an old man.

I asked her to give me examples and she listed the following:
  1. I like to bird watch.
  2. I love smooth jazz and classical music.
  3. I enjoy taking my time when walking (including grocery shopping).
  4. I'm more interested in what people have to say as oppose to being entertained.
  5. I love to sit outside, sip tea, and just enjoy the silence of rural Wyoming.
My response of course was that I enjoy these things.

That leads me to the question, what do you enjoy about getting old that you didn't used to enjoy (or appreciate) as much when you were younger?

I got 20 years on ya and I still do a lot the same stuff I did when I was 32... some better and some not so much.

I still go to the gym at least 3 times a week.... just for 45 minutes now vs 2hr's back in the heavy weight days..
I still try and play my guitar every day... just not as loud as I used to.
I still try and draw/sketch everyday .... this I do a lot better than I used to actually.

I still manage to visit with most of my immediate family each and every day. The extended family and In-laws you ask... well... I have entered the "get off my lawn" phase of my life so....
I still get up at around 5am and go to sleep around 11:30. That's actually a little off. I used to sleep around 4 to 5 hours back in the day... nowadays it's more like 6ish.
I find I do less getting out with friends that I used to.... see number 4 above.
I find time every week to continue my charity work for families with autistic children. I've been doing that for nearly 43 years now.
I still tie flies and fly fish multiple times a year if not more. Living in AZ it's a little harder and further to go but been doing that since I was 7.

So... not much has "changed"... just a little slower at some and a I know a little more about others.

Have I mentioned….not a fucking thing, being old sucks!

Tell me about it. Got my ass handed to me in Bianca's dance class last nite, so to make up for that, I went her "Yoga for Belly Dancers" class tonite. The stretches are very good for me, and they don't beat me up too bad; but it still hurts and I didn't used to have to do all this stretching and warmup crap...

To add insult to injury, I now have to dye my beard and Henna my hair far more often than I used to - never mind the cost and time for professional help: Yesterday was "Zorba's day of Beauty" - hair, facial, pedi. $210.

I got my driver's license renewed a couple of weeks ago, the new picture is hideous. Should have worn some makeup at least. This crap sucks.
