This is why I hate NSG transmissions

SM-420 , no excuses ! you know better than most , why be normal. ;) A 70 year old SM-420 would likely be more sound than a fresh NSG-370. Let us know how the 71.62 - 1 crawl ratio works for you !

Yea, an SM-420 would be fantastic, esp. with a splitter on the ass end of it. And that lovely soundtrack!

Ax15 going in, I have the rebuilt nsg for sale, this is my solution, easier than a 435, I had to tweak the shifter to get it to match up to what the original was. Now to finish the rear main seal.

Damn, too bad that you are so far away. I'd take you up on that NSG.

Is it in Utah or alaska?

So latest update, went to install the ax15 to the atlas, the rear output shaft bound up. So i ordered a new input shaft for the atlas, had Novak install, and found that the inner spines from the input were binding by about.030”. So they installed the spacer plate from advanced and everything fits and worked perfectly.

I decided to go with the factory shifter, so cut off the top of the extra nsg shift tower, then cut back the ax, silver brazed together. A little minor bending of the shifter and it fits like stock.

Now I have a rear diff driveline vibe, at 3.5 degrees it’s annoying at 75 mph at 1.0 degrees it’s terrible at 60. I also think the backlash is a little much, the front pinion bearing feels hot. So now I am wondering if the guy who installed the gears messed up. I may pull the cover and look. Feels smooth but it’s on the hot side of normal compared to the front differential.

Yeah, drove it today, reset the pinion angle to 1.5-1.6, the rear diff just don’t seem right, backlash just doesn’t seem right. It’s seems likely that the gears are noisy. Pisses me off, I spent good money on getting them installed… by a local offroad shop.

just for my own knowledge, what IS normal? I expect the rear to be hotter than the front since the front is only freewheeling while the rear is under load. Friction exists so it's going to warm up, but I don't know how much.

When my rear gears ate themselves (due to improper pinion depth) there was no vibration, it just howled when unloaded (neutral throttle or coasting in neutral), and got quiet when under load (accel or engine braking).

It howls under load, just don’t feel right, with no rear shaft installed, it has too much backlash, think maybe pinion depth, I will open it up after the first of the year

I’m sure you’re going to take it back to the shop. They should fix this.

I brought the parts, so they only did labor and it was over a year ago, probably won’t get A warranty.
