The good news thread

Eli survived his first school musical.

The kid has a hell of a deep voice for a 12 year old. We didn't even know he had a solo. The other side of that coin is he dances like he has snowshoes on.

Owen's hockey season ended today. We didn't go to the last game because it was an 8 am game, 2.5 hours away. Owen's team won, but it sounds like it was a hell of a rough game. The opposing team were getting shellacked and started throwing punches. At the end of the game, one of the kids on the opposing team cold-cocked one of his team mates and laid him out flat. I heard Owen was one of the first ones there to help him up.
This is one hockey season that everyone is happy to see over. Parents hate the coach and the coach hates the parents. The coach struck me as someone who should be working with high school kids. Not 8 year old kids. Also came across as an asshole.

As for more hockey, the rink where Owen trains is also the home ice for the Chicago Steel, a USHL team and the Chicago Blackhawks farm team. One of the season ticket holders is not going to be able to attend a lot of the home games this season, so he donated the tickets to the Cyclones Hockey organization that Owen and his Dad play for. There was a drawing and Owen won 10 tickets to five games. The minor league games are a hoot. I don't know if Owen will take me but I bet he'll ask grandma to go with at least once.

I don't want to sound like a creeper, but I enjoy following the escapades of your grandsons.

All the crybabies that lobbied against it can suck Philly's ass

Allowing this is like putting a ghost runner on second base in extra innings... formerly respected games being turned into video games. Remember the NFL took away tall people trying to block FG's when SF got one blocked in OT in a playoff game. The NFL combine got nearly as many viewers as any Monday Night game. That tells you where the game is these days.

good summary of the sour grapes of many teams. If ^^^ were the case every team would do it all the time, most if not all have tried, it's apparently not as easy as it looks, but because Philly perfected it to a fare-the-well there was a whole lot of butthurt throughout the rest of the league, but apparently not enough to uproot it.

Last Thursday I paid off my student loans 20 years ahead of time.
Now I have more money per month to spend on the Jeep!

minimum payments are ridiculous- barely enough to pay on the interest accrued from the previous month.

that's preposterous, why would you defraud and abuse yourself by improperly taking responsibility for loans that are clearly the responsibility of the rest of us to pay off for you, after all we forced you to take the loans then tricked you into not understanding what they meant 😜 ?

Seriously though great job man!

Congrats dude!! Jealous. I am working on that right now. How 20y ahead of time, were you on the income based payment plan? Since the other options are 10 or 20y.

Nooo that new money is for saving to retire early 😉 ok and partially the Jeep

Most of the people complaining about student loan debt thought of it as easy money. Not only did they borrow for books and tuition but for excessive living expenses.
I have a good friend and former employee in his 60s who still has not paid off his SL. His balance is in the low 50s and he only pays the minimum payment. We’re talking 30+ yrs of only making the minimum. This is a very intelligent man but not with finances. He makes well north of $125 a yr in Texas not Ca where We worked together. He once bought a new F350 crew cab dully because he wanted to trailer his horse around. In regards to the horse he paid crazy money for boarding and training and occasionally road it. Also he had to pay to store the trailer and his HOA would not let him park his truck in his driveway or on the street in front of his house.
I don’t understand how these people complain about SL but still see no problem paying a loan on an expensive vehicle they don’t need.
I worked full time raising a family when I went back to get my degree. I paid each semester out of pocket. I payed with my CC and accrued miles which after graduation I used to take my Wife on a nice Hawaiian vacation. Because my degree was in high demand the signing bonus from my first job covered all of my education expenses. Many of the complainers never graduated or got degrees in fields that did not pay well. It comes down to poor planning and choices.
A degree in Mid Evil Women's Basket Weaving won’t pay the bills.

If your friend properly made the required payment for 30+ years, he might want to request the rest be forgiven.

Also, student debt has been crazy for a while due to the costs of tuition, housing, and food. The schools, property owners, and lenders are the big winners. Every step of the way is a money grab, so many kids are screwed even before they spend irresponsibly. To make things worse, many of these borrowers have jobs that pay disproportionally low compared to the rising costs of goods and living.

Back in the day, a student could work in the summer to pay for most of their school costs. Those days are long gone.

It has gotten way out of control, kids (and their parents) have to be smarter today about approaching these decisions. First off we all know by now most degrees are useless, so only only go if the degree you're seeking is absolutely necessary for the field you're targeting. Second, mitigate mitigate mitigate these costs all you can. I know it sucks & it's not going to give the same experience but commute to community college the first two years & cash flow that, then finish at the university & if you can commute there better still. Borrow as little as humanly possible.

What day was that 1912 :ROFLMAO:

Seriously though I started in 84, worked my ass off every summer & saved & the most I could muster was covering my spending money for the year, I still had to borrow for tuition/room/board.

When government started guaranteeing the student loans, tuition and useless degrees have skyrocketed.

I started in 81 granted I dropped out, but I worked and took classes and worked the summer to pay my tuition, room and board.

Did it for 2 years and said screw it, I have always been lucky and had a decent paying job.

We live frugal and carry minimal debt.

Probably make minimum payments on the car loans and continually roll/trade them into newer cars too

A lot of people live like that. Don't forget, if they have real estate, it's mortgaged and refi'd every few years in an attempt to keep floating the luxury items. The broke people are usually the flashiest.

Few things piss me off more than student loan forgiveness (exceptions for public school teachers, first responders, etc..) and like most things I blame the parents. These kids are generally under 18 when they sign up for school, which means the parents are supporting and signing off their bad decisions. My parents read me the riot act about going to an out of state (state) school and making sure I had campus jobs and summer jobs. We did the math and knew that even with those jobs, I'd graduate with debt. I will say, when I did graduate in 2004 it was probably the best time to consolidate student loans for fixed payments and discounts for automatic withdrawal. It still took me 10+ years to pay them off and in the early years, paying my students loans meant I was not at the bar with friends.

I think the whole "I didn't know it was going to be like this" argument is BS too, when I started my loans, you had to go through this little education course that had you estimate the amount you'd have to borrow and what the payments would be and what the total cost of the loan would end up being.
