The good news thread

I think the whole "I didn't know it was going to be like this" argument is BS too, when I started my loans, you had to go through this little education course that had you estimate the amount you'd have to borrow and the what the payments would be and what the total cost of the loan would end up being.

Yup. We even had a worksheet with the expected salary of your degree for the first few years. Zero excuse for not knowing the impact.

I haven't heard that before. I do know they made it too easy to get student loans, and many just did it because it was the easy path. I never took any, but I did apply for grants and scholarships every year, and each time I had to take extra steps to remove myself from signing up for a student loan. One time I actually had to call to get a student loan removed from my student account, and the person I talked to seemed astonished that I didn't want that money, like a salesman surprised I didn't want to buy a car.

When government started guaranteeing the student loans, tuition and useless degrees have skyrocketed.

Yup, that's the biggest factor in this mess, proving once again that anything the government touches turns to shit.

When I went to college the dorms were akin to army barracks, just a cinder block walled 'room' for two guys, bunkbeds, community bathroom down the hall, & the food in the 'caf' was on par with prison food, absolute garbage. But that all kept costs low.

30+ years later my daughter followed in my footsteps & want to my alma mater, her private suite with full kitchen and private bath was more like the Four Seasons & the food was phenomenal, comparatively. It reflected massively in the differences in what her annual costs were compared to mine. That, in addition to obscene & unjustifiable increases in tuition yielded a way out of proportion increase in overall costs for the same exact degree. Fortunately in her case she immediately entered the military and they shouldered most of her costs for years 2, 3 & 4. She's still in the military, PA National Guard, and is currently in Africa with her unit. It was a win win win.

I hear under water basket weaving pays better!!!! 🤣🤣

Or 'left-handed puppetry' as Dave Ramsey likes to say :ROFLMAO:

It was a requirement for me for FASFA before the first time they would loan me anything... No clue if they got rid of it or other people's parents did that part for them or what. Just some online thing, this was like 2014?

Not saying I did all that well about avoiding them, but I'm paying my loans off and got a job that allows me to. I never got a single scholarship, my parents made too much (never gave me a dime) and I was too white. Or something.

Imagine if they gave scholarships just for being white, like they do for like every other race. That would be absolutely terrible

I was once informed by a black guy that because I'm white, I have it easier. He must have forgotten that I knew he was from a horse farming, country club family with financial means, or maybe he forgot. :sneaky:

I’m at the community college 1983ish. Paying my way. Was quite affordable.

I remember non-caucasian students going up to the teacher after class and getting a form signed. I asked what they were doing ( I’m dumb to the ways of the world) and it was to show that they were attending class and could get it paid for or reimbursed. 1983. This shit isn’t new.

Funny story: one of these students was supposed to do a paper on euthanasia. When she read her report turns out she did a very nice synopsis on the Youth In Asia. We all had a good laugh.

My degrees are in Mechanical Engineering (BA) and I went back for my Masters in Engineering Management. The military paid for most of my BA and the Masters was all on me.

The biggest evidence of college being overpriced and ridiculous for me was during my Masters. It was through Penn State's accelerated program so there was no long winter/summer break. You took a final for one class on friday and your next class started Monday. Classes were powerpoints or recorded lessons from professors and while there was some group work it was limited to the final capstone project.

I didn't have to buy any books and the only time a professor got involved was if you needed to email them for clarification or ask for help. Total cost was $35,000 for 2 years. I'm glad I chose/like my major because the industry pays well, I can't imagine getting into student loan debt to be a teacher or social worker and make what they make.

There are a staggering number of scholorships that kids can get just by writing an essay or applying. I had the military to pay for my bachelor degree but that was always my plan.

One of my coworkers paid for his entire associates by applying for all the scholarship's he could find.

That's how I did it, or at least the bulk. We added it up when I graduated, and I (we, my dad threw in) spent somewhere around $10,000 cash. Everything else was paid via grants and scholarship. (state school, in-state) Interesting thing, and I think it's by design, the grants were bigger in the beginning, by dried up as I progressed, so I had to rely more on scholarships toward the end, which were merit based, so I stayed on the Dean's list my last two years. The first two I stayed on a different list. :sneaky:

I'm lucky to have a wife that understands/despises debt the same way I do so when we sold our previous house we took 50k from that and applied it to the loans. I paid the remaining 15ish over the past year and a half.

The real crime with these lenders is that they pushed out my next payment due date by 15 years or so. They want you to take as long as possible to get all that interest.

I remember the conversations with my dad, showing him the "expected family contribution" based on his income precluded me from any grants. And him just being like "damn that sucks bro" 🤣

It is definitely odd that when you pay extra on student loans, it defaults to paying your next payment(s) instead of going to principal. You can check a box so it does but it's weird that isn't the default for additional payments.

Hey, I know a guy who used to work under water. 10 years ago he was being paid something around $1,500/hr. Under water weaving might pay better than you think. ;)

Yep. Try underwater welding - pays very well. Almost as good as Roto Rooter pays their skin divers!

I actually worked with a guy who set two world records for the world's deepest working dive. One of them still stood at the time I worked with him, maybe it still does...
