The decline of restaurants and eating out

We went to Italy a few years ago and had beef tartare--raw hamburger. The mental hurdle to get over and eat it was tall. But it wasn't bad!

Ate that stuff on a work trip to Czech Republic and one of the guys there pretty well refused to eat at the restaurant because he didn’t trust anything we were eating. Pilsner kept everything safe.

Things must be worse than I realized for some of you if McDs is even in consideration. Even as a kid in the early 90s I knew their was something weird about their beef...less a taste and more texture maybe, but when I bite into it and look at the bitten edge it just doesn't look right.

That said, there are times when I'm hungry and it's my only option, in which case I get a McChurger...which I did not name or invent but I get a McChicken and a double cheeseburger, take the DC apart and put the entire McChicken between the "beef" patties.

I like the menu items at Carl's Jr ..like the Western Bacon cheeseburger. But so many of their locations seem run down and dumpy that it's hard to trust they're adhering to food safety guidelines. A lot of them can't be bothered to put the burger together in a way that even looks appetizing.

I'm fortunate to live within Braums territory...an Oklahoma based Burger and dairy. The beef and milk are all from their ranch. Bunch of ice cream flavors, my go tos are usually choc chip cookie dough, mint choc chip, or cappuccino chunky chocolate. They make a darn good breakfast burrito, too, and their cherry limeade blows Sonic away.

Never eaten horse, but as muscular as they are I would expect it to be lean and dry. Like bison but even worse. I would struggle with the psychology of it, because every horse I've spent even minutes with had a distinct personality. That may be true of pigs too but ignorance is bliss and I'm on the fence about eating swine for other reasons anyway.

Its not my absolute favorite, but nevertheless, I luv me a Big Mac! Right now, I'd kill for one all things considered. I don't remember the horsemeat I ate, but I'm pretty sure I didn't dislike it. Buffalo I'll eat any time I can get it, which isn't very often. Other than Ham, I could do without pork - the Jews and Moslems are dead nuts right: Its garbage meat. It also tastes like cardboard without a LOT of prep. Now lamb, when properly prepared by just about anyone who isn't an American, is divine!

I'm sorry to hear Carl's Jr has gone downhill in your area, they were clean, new, and spiffy in my area of California. OTOH, most Wendy's here in Florida look a bit tired.

Interesting comment about lamb , I would try it again if someone who knew what they were doing , prepared it. It was nasty and reviled antelope that had run 20 miles before it was shot . Gamey and nasty. My other food experience fail is catfish , everyone says it's great and I got some that was from muddy water.
I've tried it 6-8 times and no joy.

What the hell no catfish, there's no hope for you.

I would suggest a trip to New Orleans and give it another try.

I'm not a huge food snob, some of the stuff McD has doesn't taste bad at all, especially when they used to have those chicken wraps and stuff. My previous employer had me supporting IT in a town that had basically nothing BUT a McDs, and the worst part was honestly how I felt for a few hours after eating it. It would ruin my whole day.

At least when you go to a fast food place you kind of expect the quality bar to be low (even though the prices aren't always reflecting that), but with restaurants these days it seems even if you pay a lot you get "meh" food and cranky servers.

Probably got fried stuff - a big dose of all that overheated, oxidized vegetable oil is likely the reason you feel that way when you eat there

What's funny is everyone has had the Taco Bell runs , yet unlike Chipotle Mexican Grill , people aren't dying from it. The food is just okay , but we all want to have it at times . Free Enterprise in action.

I'll go to TB before chipotle any day of the week. Same crappy fast food, one is way more expensive

Wow, luv me some deep fried southern catfish! I have stories!! As for lamb, Americans don't know how to cook it, or prep it. Good marinade cooked low and slow. Too much heat turns it into crap. If its served with mint jelly, RUN!
