The simple life?

yea, I really don't understand how it all works, but this thing can take frozen anything and turn it into a reasonable facsimile of ice cream.

That's the whole idea behind this thing, it can turn anything into 'ice-cream' or sorbet. I'll give you an example, you can mix protein powder (either whey OR vegan) with water and that's it. It'll be similar to ice-milk, but can be done with zero dairy if you can't tolerate that. You can mix things like berries & walnuts (for the oil element), I haven't tried that but have seen it on video.

The vanilla version I made the other day was as follows:

16oz Fairlife fat free milk = 160 calories & 26 grams of protein
2 scoops of vanilla whey protein powder = 180 calories & 38 grams of protein

Total 340 calories & 64 grams of protein.

You can substitute almond or oat milk and vegan pea protein powder for the above for zero dairy.

The first three I made were nothing more than these protein shakes, 190 calories, 30 grams of protein & 0 fat, they came out amazing:

not sure on the walnuts, might make it gritty? But protein shakes make great mixtures. We have been using the premiere shakes from Costco and sometimes we add in coconut, fresh pineapple. We also bought several sugar free flavoring bottles to mix things up.

you pulverize the walnuts (and dates for sweetness) in the Vitamix first, otherwise known as the cigarette racing boat propulsion system of the kitchen... I can't remember what else went in I've watched around 100 of these videos lately :ROFLMAO:, I think it was protein powder & oat milk, whatever it was it looked really good.

There's a ton you can do with Greek yogurt too, I'll be experimenting with all of it over the course of the summer. If I can knock out 40+/- grams of protein without anything harmful tagging along for the ride & enjoy it at the same time this thing is going to be a win win.

Another thing I'll be trying is just straight up fruit, I picked up a couple cans of peaches & pears in their own juice, no sugar or syrup added. From the videos I've seen it makes pretty nice looking Italian ice type stuff.

This is how my wife and my son have been doing it. She gets the cans of peaches, pears, and pineapple in just their own juices and that is how she makes. Going to have to give the protein powder stuff a try. Can't do regular ice cream anymore will give it a whirl.

yea, I've been hearing that for the better part of a year. It seems the grounds are fertile for it to happen again, time will tell.

exactly, a rising tide lifts all ships but a falling tide drops them all... at least if I'm staying in area anyway, a market crash may mean a million & one cheaper houses on the market people can't get rid of, but mine will be included in that sloppy mess, so any move would still be financially lateral. We don't get the crazy run ups in prices in PA like other areas of the country, but the dips aren't as bad either when shit goes sideways

I have a HS friend in Boise who has made out pretty well for himself since the early 80's with two sources of income. First, he has a small lawn mowing business that can clear $150K a year and second he's not a house "flipper" but he's made a few interesting and strategic moves with his place of residence that have worked out well.

He owned a home with his wife and one kid in the mid-80's and because he mowed grass for both the more wealthy AND realtors who had him maintain property that was not occupied but on the market he began to see some patterns in what was becoming one of the hottest markets in the country as Boise moved into the tech age. By 87 he began to see a huge jump in homes the realtors wanted him to maintain and he decided to sell his home and rent them one of them in a barter situation. He did... the market fell and they he bought on the other side near the bottom the home he was "renting" from the real estate company.

So... along comes the 90's and Boise boomed with Micron, Jabil, JDS Uniphase and other hot tech companies. He kept mowing and observing and again in 98 he sold and rented.... he bought again in 2002. Again, he mowed and observed and sold in 2006 and bought again in 2011. He's been in that house until about a month ago when he sold again and is now renting. His lawn business is still running but he's not mowing any longer. Over that time he's been able to move from a 1950's salt box up to a 4K sf home on the hill that was bought in cash all from mowing lawns and observing.

So... maybe it's time to sell and rent for a couple years. Or take that RV drive around the nation while the market corrects. IMHO it has to correct.

Small update, what began as a three year phase out of the profession in March is suddenly 2.5 years, in a blink. The associate is getting more involved at the office so that's on track. On the home front I recently had an oil tank scare, at over 60 years old it looked to be ready to pop a leak any second so out of an abundance of caution I had the oil company pump it out into 55 gallon drums pending the installation of a new tank which was scheduled for a few weeks away. Turns out that the best location for the new tank was in a closet in the family room. The thing has a good footprint so it caused me to juggle some shelving and other storage to accommodate the tank, and as I began that process it cascaded into another mega dump of crap I was holding onto for reasons unclear. This closet was practically the last frontier of hording in the house (not counting the garage that holds a metric fuck-ton of crap, though 99% of that is TJ related). I ended up tossing a bunch of stuff in the trash, gave away some useable things on Face Book Marketplace, and consolidated a bunch of the kid's stuff that they left here when they moved out, all to be delivered to their houses upon my next visit .

On the housing end, I put a hold on the search, just nothing out there in the areas I can reasonably move within proximity to work, so I'll resume that search once I'm officially out of there.

On the 'retirement purpose' end, the fitness routines have been getting more involved and I've added several layers. I started practicing yoga again, and while I suck at it, I find it very useful, and I've added a layer of straight up meditation to it, also suck at that but it's improving, and one thing that helps is unplugging for two hours per day, no tv, computer, phone, nothing, just silence; I've also been hiking regularly with a couple different groups. I think a very large layer of my retirement purpose will be revolving around fitness, a larger layer than I had previously contemplated. Having intensified the routines over the past year plus I can say the benefits are tremendous, and it's addictive, I literally haven't felt this good in decades. I have a couple other things in the works in that regard, the subject of future updates depending on how that all breaks. I've also been reading a lot more, my trips to the library have quickened in pace, currently ripping through Stoic philosophy, fascinating stuff.

On the woman end, I had a run at dating for a while earlier this year after the last long term girlfriend bolted, but I backed off, just talking to these women I started wondering wtf I was even doing it for - the best answer I could come up with was habit. Having girlfriends pretty much non-stop since high school, broken only by a 23 year stint in the middle with the girlfriend/fiancé/wife, I just didn't know any other way. The longer I fly solo the more I wonder if it's even worth it anymore at my age. We'll see, that one is a tossup, I'll probably get bored & dip back into it again, but my attitude has shifted towards the whole concept, it just ain't all it's cracked up to be anymore.

This is good action! It makes me happy to see people rewriting their ending and finding out there's still plenty of good life to be had.
Keep up the updates, brother!

thanks man, and it is a fairly profound rewrite. As recently as Spring of last year the woman and I were going strong, or so I thought, regularly contemplating towns/cities/states we may retire to together, I was 58 & getting way too soft physically, my outside activities, relationships and general focus had just decayed, and while it was a comfortable road I was on, it wasn't a particularly good one. Life has a way of shaking you out of those trances, it can be, and is, painful at first, it presents itself as a breakup, job loss or other seeming tragedy, no one likes to move away from the familiar & comfortable, but I've been down this road before & it leads to better places unknown as it forces you to open your eyes, get creative, and see potential you had ignored.

I'm on that road now, it's pretty exciting to not know what's around the bend, but there is opportunity for sure.

I've been in good shape most of my life, but I've dialed it in with the enhanced training regimen I started last year. I've added a couple tweaks to the home gym with some useful pieces I was missing, this is the crown jewel of the whole-house man cave I live in:

I'm pretty lean, probably around 12-13% body fat, mostly attributable to a high metabolism brought on by a shit-ton of walking & general inability to sit still, but the weight training has really helped tighten shit up

Had a very similar upheaval about 8 years ago.
2 years of chaos kicked off by being ejected from my home on false pretenses, 5 arrests, $120K in legal fees, the nastiest divorce this county has ever seen.
I did lose all possessions and was briefly homeless.
It turned out to be my biggest blessing.
I emerged, not only pristine legally, but in great shape physically, spiritually and mentally.
I was able to rescue my kids and gain full custody, secured a judgement for legal fees and paid off all debt including about $80K of secret debt the ex had run up.

I only survived that by extreme focus on my health and spiritual wellbeing. Along with your physical transformation, don't neglect spiritual growth.

I was able to drop ALL medications- blood pressure and cholesterol, and bring my BP and cholesterol down to healthy levels. I actually signed up for and competed a full ironman race (and two more since)

When I see men reshaping their lives like this, it's personal.

Kudos to you and thank you for sharing your journey. I hope it inspires many to follow you!

Well God Damn! That is incredible, much respect.

My first gargantuan multi-faceted train wreck wasn't quite as colorful but it took place between 2009-2011 & definitely left a mark, but like you it was a real phoenix rising from the ashes moment of life, I emerged from all that a completely different person. That experience has greatly helped me this go-around, much quicker to recognize shit and react, and unlike the first time around there was no moment of despondency because I knew good would come out of it all.

Men get a bad rap everywhere we turn from women, society in general, the gubment... we're supposed to just eat shit, smile, & keep everything running smoothly for the benefit of everyone else, & truth be told like most of us I was adept at just that. But fuck that & fuck everybody.

Funny side-note, the last battery of dating I was on was pretty interesting. When I was first divorced I was mid-40s so the age range I was looking at was roughly 40-45, I prefer women at or near my age. That was a tough crowd, mostly because they were primarily recently divorced, and following 20 years of marriage still thought they had the market value they had when they were last single in their 20s, reality hadn't really sunk into most of them. Still I managed fairly well, but it was trying. This time I'm nearly 15 years older so the target audience is mid to later 50s, dramatically different ballgame & attitude on their end. Their desperation shows, the response rate to my initial messages was probably 5x what it was years ago. Still, while they are a lot more willing to talk and meet, they cannot leave their provision seeking ways behind, I felt like I was at a job interview half the time. Big turn off, I was looking for a girlfriend to hang out with & enjoy life while they're looking to nail down housing & retirement benefits on my dime. Umm, fuck you, I've spent my entire adult life providing for women & children while putting myself at the bottom of the list, you know, 'being a man', but those days are gone baby gone, you're welcome to join me on my journey but only to the extent you're going to enhance it, not expect to be carried by it.

100% agree with your position and assessment.
I went through dating with 4 women shortly after the divorce. All of them were looking for a meal ticket.
I made a choice to go into "monk mode" for a full year, no compromising.
Emerged from that stronger than ever and had a couple brief flings and quickly rejected them because I don't want another dependent.

Bumped into my now wife and we hit it off. She has a similar philosophy and interests and she's 100% financially independent.

Started to write a book, but clipped it back to this- staying 100% true to my own code and remaining financially independent of each other has resulted in a wonderful relationship.
We've never had an argument because either of us can walk away at a moments notice without any money or property issues. It makes mutual respect a habit and I'll never have it any other way.

the parallels are interesting. I was in it a little longer after my divorce, I had either 7 or 8 short term-ish girlfriends over the course of the following 4 years, from 2012 to 2015, had a lotta fun during that stretch but something was off, I didn't really realize it at the time but I wasn't really in the right place & probably shouldn't have been dating, I shit-canned every one of them in succession, so I too went full monk for a year, that's when I had just gotten the TJ in 2016, spent a year just fucking off, hanging with my buddies, wheeling, bbq'ing meat, drinking beer... looking back I wonder why I ever stopped but I'm sure I just wanted to get laid. So I dipped back in, Spring 2017, & boom, ran into my last girl that turned out to the the longest term one of my life outside of my wife, I really thought I had hit pay dirt with her but alas, 2024 saw the wheels come off and here I am.

I've been a hard no on another marriage, I'm firmly in the fool-me-once-club, and that probably played into her decision to trot off in a new direction but it is what it is.

My philosophy is simple, I'm fine with a life-partner to the end, I'm loyal like a dog, like most men; I draw the line at inviting the government into the relationship as a third party that has an irrevocable vote in my future should things go sideways, they're already far enough up my ass without me asking them to go deeper. Dating the same woman for life without a contract is the purest form of mutual trust though like I said, it may have cost me.

For nerds of the show and/or aircraft nerds, the crash footage in the opening sequence is of NASA's M2F2 lifting body research aircraft. The pilot actually survived and recovered to fly again, I believe the aircraft was rebuilt as well. :geek:

@Westtown Willy, please pardon the slight thread derail. No idea why I know this shit, but seemed like the only opportunity I might ever have to share a nugget like that. Strike while the iron's hot and all that... ;)

I get what you're aiming at. My story is a bit different, yet with a number of key similarities. I'm on year 15 of a life recovery plan at the moment (shit went pear-shaped in a big way between '08-'10), with the ultimate goal of simplifying my life and eliminating all possible bullshit and drama from it. Getting there but it's taken some time. Just have to keep plugging, the effort will come good...someday. 👍

Derail away, some of the more interesting things in life come off the beaten path. I had no idea where that footage came from, I just remember as a kid watching that show religiously & loving every minute of it, the opening sequence has been a metaphor for so many events ever since. The Bionic Woman was pretty cool too.

15 year recovery plan really is just another way of saying it's a life-long plan, we should all be on a never ending quest to improve one way or another. It's when we stagnate & get too comfortable that shit goes bad, this has happened to me many times in the past, and that's what I was alluding to above with getting too comfortable in a relationship, putting too much focus on it to the detriment of other things, hobbies, friends, physical conditioning...

Reminds me of this:

One other thing I’ve been working on is the nutrition side. Moved towards whole foods as much as practical. This began in January 2024 when I cut out sweets. I’ve got a wicked, almost crack-like addiction to all things dessert, it was so bad I couldn’t keep anything in my house because I’d knock it down in one sitting. Entire bag of Reece’s cups, whole pie, pack of Oreos, dozen donuts, fuck it, down the hatch it went in one sitting. It’s been that way forever. I finally decided to kick that cold turkey, going on two years now & it’s nothing more than a memory.

When I jacked up the strength training regimen last summer, I also began to tweak the ratios of what I was eating to focus more on protein, so I started cooking more proteins and consuming supplements to hit some targets. After a while it all just started tasting too much like candy bars and chocolate milk so I started paying attention to the ingredient lists, what a shitshow. At the same time I began weeding out seed oils, artificial sweeteners, and as much processed food as possible.

Looking for an alternative to commercial protein bars I stumbled across a bunch of YouTube videos on various homemade ones. Tried a bunch, most sucked bad. Then I came across this one which was a winner, however after a few batches it became a little tiresome as the recipe, as was, yielded bars that were way too dense and hard to chew. I fixed it by adding a half a jar of all natural chunky peanut butter to the recipe which solved the problem, besides being more friendly on the jaw the flavor is much better; it also added some much needed calories which I need to get more of. The bars are topped with melted pure cacao which itself tastes like asphalt, but when combined with the honey gives a great chocolate flavor without any added sugar.

I also found a protein powder with precious few ingredients, so this particular recipe is about as minimal as I could get it while still tasing good. I’ve been making these for months, so I thought I’d share the format in case anyone was interested:

INGREDIENTS:

200g Organic Rolled Oats (533 calories/22.2g protein)

175g Whey Protein Isolate (710calories/131g protein)

100g Powdered Peanut Butter (400caloris/53.28g protein)

165g Organic Honey (550calories/0g protein)

110g Pumpkin Puree (45calories/1g protein)

227g All Natural Peanut Butter (1,347calories/56g protein)

Pinch of salt

4 squares Pure Cacao melted (280calories/8g protein)

Total: 3,865 calories 271.5g protein

Per bar (16 total) 241 calories 17g protein

Mix the wet ingredients in the mixing bowl first, then mix the dry ingredients in a separate bowl to incorporate well, then mix altogether, then add it to a 9x9 dish lined with parchment paper and smash down with the bottom of a cup, cover and refrigerate until stiff, then top with melted pure cacao which is pure chocolate, naturally zero sugar.

You guys are awesome. You go, do it!

I wake up and eat a couple eggs, a little bacon or beef or chicken, sour dough toast. Then suit up and jump on the atv, SxS, or on the tractor. Survey and pick what I am going to do today on the farm.

Then it's tractor or chain saw work. Or string trimmer as well. Fell trees, cut rounds, throw them on the log splitter. Move and stack firewood for drying.

Maint on the equipment some days and checking drainage others.

No home Gym. Lol. No need.

Be well. Jeep on. Farm on.

Few updates, celebrating one year alcohol free, never felt better.
