Steering locked on my drive home...lucky to be alive (hoping for some direction on diagnosing)

Did some front end work about a week ago...extended lower CA's to correct caster and alignment.

Drove 20 miles to work this morning, hit a few clients then made it about 16 miles into the return trip home. Mostly highway, tons of traffic but with no issues. No rogue noises, no shakes or shimmy's, no odor and absolutely no issues with steering.

Exiting the highway into a clockwise cloverleaf to the right which went fine. Road straightens out leading up to a stop sign and then a left turn. Road clears and I head straight across the first two lanes and turn the steering wheel to the left and it's frozen. Won't turn left. It felt like it was at the end of its' travel. I was lucky that I could go straight into a parking lot which I did and right into a parking spot. Absolutely no warning. No clunks, noises, drips, groaning or other indication that there was a problem. No hanging or misaligned parts. Visual inspection looks in good order. Fluid stain in the picture below isn't from the TJ.

I am lucky to be parked, Jeep running with the wheels straight, but I still can't turn the wheel left. Turned it to the right to full lock, which it did without issue and that's where then locks. Fully turned to passenger and no way to turn it straight. Feels dead locked frozen turning to driver and at full lock to passenger. Rolls without issue, though I don't want to move it out of the spot it's in.

Could have had a very different ending. Now faced with getting it flat bedded and sorted.

I have my money (literally) on the steering box.

I should have tried to turn the wheel with the power off, to rule out the pump, but the ease with which it turned to passenger tells me it's the box and not the pump.

Steering wheel can turn to passenger what little is left, but hard locked when trying to turn to driver, motor on or off makes no difference.

@MikekiM did you ever figure this out? I have a 2008 JK Sahara and had something similar happen (my post is here). Especially weird bc both times it was only when turning right/clockwise (whether that's a coincidence or a pattern, I'm still not sure).

Similar symptoms as yours, though - it felt completely locked as if it had reached the end of its travel.

In both cases, turning the wheel left/counter-clockwise was 100% fine, and also served to unlock it.

Yes, very curious as to the resolution of this.

Um…. I should have closed the loop on this. Very possible I failed to come back to it out of embarrassment.

The episode above happened a few days after I had taken the Jeep on a four day camping trip. It was November.
Apparently a four legged critter decided to hide a nut behind the grill. I know this partly because we found the nut lodged against the pitman arm and also because I found foot prints on my front bumper that were either raccoon, squirrel or possum.

Best guess is that behind the grill was warm and the critter thought it a good place to stash some vitals for spring.

This post will self destruct after some unknown period of time…. Can’t have this floating around the interwebs…

This is wild (literally). But also no so far-fetched that I won't take a look... I actually did front-end work a couple weeks ago (removing the hood and front grill for a paint job), and it wouldn't be entirely out of character for me to have dropped a bolt or something down there. Worth checking out.
