TOS-L-Star-of-the-Seas-Update-02.jpg

What will become the largest cruise ship in the world is set to begin sailing from Port Canaveral in August, but first Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas has to complete a series of sea trials.

The sister ship to current titleholder Icon of the Seas that debuted out of Miami last year ventured out into the waters off the coast of Turku, Finland, where the 248,663-gross-ton vessel has been under construction since February 2023.

With less than 100 days before its Aug. 31 debut from the Orlando-area port, the ship left Monday on an 11-day series of trials to test out the vessel’s navigation, naval architecture and engineering with more than 2,000 watchful eyes on board making sure Star of the Seas is seaworthy.

The open-ocean trials will cover hundreds of miles before it returns to the shipyard for final touches followed by an official handover to Royal Caribbean and transatlantic sailing to Port Canaveral.

The ship is the second of four announced Icon-class vessels that will each be incrementally larger than their sister ships. The class is about 15,000 more than the six existing Oasis-class vessels — five of which had previously held the title for world’s largest cruise ship.

Star of the Seas will have a 5,610-passenger capacity based on double occupancy — but will approach 8,000 passengers plus 2,350 crew at full capacity.

The signature architectural feature of the class is the 367-ton, 82-foot-tall, 164-foot-wide glass-and-metal AquaDome that sits atop the bow of the ship.

It’s the signature space on board the Icon class that houses the AquaTheater, home to original productions that combine diving, aerialists and dancing with a high-energy fountain and light show. The ship also features an ice-skating rink and main stage theater, for which the marquee show will be a “Back to the Future” musical.

Star of the Seas will feature 40 food and beverage options mostly mirroring the venues found on Icon of the Seas, except Icon’s Empire Supper Club themed to 1920s-era New York will become the Lincoln Park Supper Club themed to 1930s-era Chicago.

The ship will sail seven-night alternating Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries, partnering alongside Royal’s Utopia of the Seas that debuted in summer 2024 at Port Canaveral. It will continue three- and four-night Bahamas itineraries.

That's interesting. That is the second new ship I'm aware of that has a straight up and down bow - not sure why that is suddenly a "thing" again after 100 years. I also don't see the "Viking Crown Lounge", which has been an RC trademark on all their ships since forever.

Horses for courses. It's all about the design parameters.

High school track star stripped of state title over celebration stunt that copied Olympic gold medalist

Back in 2004, Maurice Greene set a record, and his teammates came out with a fire extinguisher and sprayed his shoes down.

A California high school track star’s post-race celebration that paid homage to an Olympic gold medalist resulted in her disqualification and the stripping of her state championship title by outraged officials.

North Salinas High School sophomore Clara Adams had just crossed the finish line as the winner in the 400 meters at Buchanan High in Clovis on Saturday when the excited teen ran over to her father to celebrate, the Mercury News reported.

Her proud father, David, handed his daughter a fire extinguisher, and away from her competitors, she sprayed on her shoes as if they were on fire.

However, the moment was quickly extinguished by California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) officials, who viewed Adams’ actions as unsportsmanlike and disqualified her.

What would you expect? It was North Salinas High. As a (non-North) Salinas High graduate, we'd NEVER do something like that! :D ;)

Seriously, what a crock of shit. Typical overreaction by school "officials".

Seems like a "let's not do this again, here's your warning" may have been a little more reasonable.

https://www.wsfa.com/2025/06/06/tsa-urges-people-stop-trying-use-costco-card-sufficient-real-id/

The TSA is expressing frustrations with travelers who are not providing a proper REAL ID to fly.

In a Facebook post Wednesday, the TSA made it known that a Costco membership card is not an acceptable identification.

“We love hotdogs & rotisserie chickens as much as the next person, but please stop telling people their Costco card counts as a REAL ID because it absolutely does not,” the TSA wrote in the post.

Lots of helicopter traffic near me right now in response to this... Will have to be watching what's happening with this fire since I've got an appointment in Wenatchee tomorrow and this is near Hwy 97 going over Blewitt Pass.

MURRAY, Ky. — A man from Murray, Kentucky, was arrested last week after police say he released a raccoon inside a business. This comes just months after the same man was arrested for attempting to evade police officers on a mule.

On June 6, 2025, Murray Police Department responded to a call that a person had intentionally released a raccoon into an open business, and that he had fled the scene.

Soon after, officers initiated a traffic stop on Jonathan Mason, 40. According to police, he refused to roll down his windows or exit his vehicle. Officers physically removed Mason from the vehicle.

Investigators learned the raccoon that was released into the business bit a person, and that Mason was previously warned that he was not allowed on the property of the business.

Mason was arrested and charged with Assault 2nd Degree, Criminal Trespassing 3rd Degree, Resisting Arrest, and Failure of Owner to Maintain Required Insurance 1st Offense. He was lodged in the Calloway County Jail.

About six months prior to this incident, Mason was arrested for a different crime, also involving an animal.

In December 2024, Murray Police Department responded to a local bar after an "unruly individual", who had been asked to leave was refusing to do so. Officers found Murray outside the business under the influence of alcohol.

Mason had ridden a mule to the establishment and refused to stop when ordered by an officer. Authorities say Mason resisted as the officer continued to try to place him under arrest.

Witnesses told investigators they say Mason whip the mule at a different establishment an "unnecessary amount" of times in addition to mistreating the animal in other ways.

As a result, Mason was arrested, the mule was stabled, and Mason was charged with Disorderly Conduct 2nd Degree, Alcohol Intoxication In a Public Place, Criminal Trespassing 3rd Degree, Resisting Arrest and Cruelty to Animals 2nd Degree.

Just two days after the mule incident, Mason was arrested once more for attempting to flee police while riding the mule down the roadway intoxicated. He was charged with Fleeing or Evading Police 3rd Degree and Cruelty to Animals 2nd Degree.
