New engine start up problems

I haven't tested a coil rail, but, yeah, according to the spec it's shot.

I'd go with a MOPAR, Blue Streak, or NGK.

It should, with a cam/crank mismatch code.

The 05, 06 will run without the cam sensor, but with a long crank to start, and a code of course, and in limp mode. I don't think the earlier models will run without a cam sensor.

I know they will start and run without a crank position sensor. I don't know if that is true for the cam position sensor.

I know the 97-04 will not even begin to try and fire up without a viable crank position sensor which is also one of the indicators we use to start testing to see if it has a bad one. If it cranks over and sounds like it isn't even trying to fire, we start with the CPS.

My 06 cam sensor went out on the interstate. Would start and run in limp mode, limited to 2500 RPM.

There were a couple of instances reported where the OPDA seized and fractured the OPDA gear and they kept driving with 0 oil pressure till the engine seized.

With mine being a 00 would it run poorly with a cam position sensor 180 out

We had one that did not fracture the gear on the seized shaft. Instead, it bent the cam. I won't do that repair again.

The PCM is supposed to ignore the cam sensor when it's too far out from the crank sensor and batch fire the injectors. However, I have never tried it on a 00.

Interesting. That would cause poor gas mileage.

What PID would you look at to determine if the PCM is doing the batch fire?

Not really. All the GM tuned port injection cars; Camaro, Firebird, Corvette; were batch fired injection in the 80s and 90s. My 5.7 TPI Camaro gets better mileage than my SFI 4.0s.

You would have the cam/crank mismatch code, P0016, and be in limp mode, limited to about 2500 RPM.

We have reached the end of the tale of my 2000 TJ. I woke early this am thinking about this project and finally I realized that I haven't traced all my steps. So with my lovely patient wife's assistance we went to the shop to try something I had assumed was correct from day 1. When I got this reman I ASSUMED that when the guy who built it would have left it at TDC beings the marked line up on the balancer. Well we all know what ASSUMED means. Guilty again. It wasn't at TDC so when I dropped the oil pump drive thing in it was 180 off. The motor started up and ran for a bit until the plugs got fuel soaked and Lord knows what else happened. Only until I took the valve cover off having my wife watch the valves open and close me laying on my back turning the crank to get it to TRUE TDC did I discover my error. Simple fix remove the oil pump drive thing turn it 180 degrees reinstall all the pieces removed turn the key and listen to our new running smoothly 4.0 engine. Throughout this search one thought was in my mind that I put behind me because it started and ran was the issue with that drive being off. Lesson learned again not to ignore your gut feelings when working on stuff. Your mind will tell you what needs to be done I just need to learn to just trust and follow. I won't get into my other beliefs but some will know what I am thinking of and totally understand where my head's at right now. Thank you for all your help assistance and insight into this journey that has come to an end only to start another ENJOYING the fruit of our blood sweat tears and lack of sleep. Until next time God bless all of you.
