2002 4.0 5spd 140k-ish miles.

I haven't had a ton of time to dive into the jeep yet, but so far I'm at a bit of a loss. Any help/insight is much appreciated. So here's what's going on:

I was sitting with the jeep idling a few days ago after I arrived at work and the engine kind of stumbled, the oil pressure gauge dipped a little, and the RPMs surged for a second. Then, it seemed to idle a little rough, but nothing crazy. Later that evening when I headed home, it had a major hesitation when I would accelerate. First at low RPMs, then it would clear a little bit, then hesitate again until I shifted gears. Almost like it was loading up on fuel or the cats are clogged or something.

I didn't get to look at it until today. I see no vacuum leaks, my computer is telling me all sensors are operating properly (not sure I believe that), the cats don't really seem to be clogged based on IR gun temp readings. It didn't throw any codes until today, and they ended up going away on their own. Codes were P0303 and P0135.

All sensors, except Crank Position Sensor, have been replaced in the last 30k miles and a new battery installed 8 months ago. Also, the dash acted crazy for a bit and I've only gotten about 148 miles on this tank of fuel and I'm on empty... Usually I get around 230 miles to a tank before I fill up. I've included a link to a video of the dash acting up. The brake light started flashing, it started beeping, and the speedometer started sweeping.

I've seen this before and also diagnosed it/fixed it for someone, but i can't for the life of me remember what the problem was.

My suspicion is it's a sensor or possibly coil pack, a ground came loose somewhere, or something similar. I'm not ruling out the O2 sensors even though they're new, but I'm doubting that's the problem. The engine otherwise runs/sounds as if there's no mechanical issues--just the miss/hesitation /whatever it is. Hoping I didn't lose a lifter/wipe a cam lobe, but again, it certainly doesn't seem like it. It truly seems like a clogged cat, but they don't seem to be clogged, and I don't see how that would explain the dash issues.

Any ideas?

The speedometer jumping like that makes me suspect the VSS or problems with wiring going to it.

Does your live data show speed when the gauge is jumping like that?

I'll have to check tomorrow if I get a chance to work on it again. I wondered about the VSS when that happened, but I don't know if that would cause the drivability issues. Jeeps are definitely strange when it comes to electrical, sensors, etc, so I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case.

I can’t dream up a scenario where erratic VSS signal would cause hesitation. But, the fact that it’s the only gauge acting up (that I saw) in your video, that’s where my mind went.

As far as the hesitation, common possibilities are TPS, IAC, or any ignition component (crank, coil, plugs, etc.), or a fuel pump starving itself at high demand.

I’d do some snap throttle tests with a fuel gauge connected up.

Also, you did have a 303 code. That’s worth attacking or monitoring too.

Yeah, but both codes disappeared in a few minutes, and it's showing no stored codes. The lack of a consistent code is one of the things driving me nuts. Hopefully I can track it down to something simple.

More times than not, a no code drivability issue points to fuel delivery. Our TJ’s don’t have any pressure sensors on the fuel system. Random misfires and lean codes will start popping up when it gets severe.

Here's the adapter for the fuel rail to add either a Schrader valve or a fuel gauge to the rail or an 1/8" pressure transducer for an in cab gauge.

When we are pulling long stretches on a trip sometimes it will kinda jerk once or twice with the cruise on,I’d like to see it first hand, the auto meter and stepper motor is about 300 bucks, little steep for retired guy,but then I could leave my fuel pressure test kit back at home, one less box from the back to carry.

is about 300 bucks

Glowshift fuel pressure gauge is $96 on Amazon. Good enough for me.

Would be nice to do data logging. Part of why I'd eventually like to convert my entire PCM to Haltech and integrate fuel pressure, temp, oil pressure and temp and others all into the computer.
