Ford 10R80 transmission woes

The CVT driving experience is odd. I've never owned one, just had a few rentals with them.

Me: I want more rpms and power.

CVT: I'm sorry Dave, I can't let you do that

A CVT reminds me of driving a old Wards minibike with a weak centrifugal clutch in the mountains , you never know what to expect .

Only one I ever drove was a rental going to a weekend getaway. As you said, gutless trying to get up to highway speed, had to floorboard it every time, and that was very disappointing, which coming from a TJ owner says a lot.

Backing uphill into a very steep driveway, the vehicle stopped moving and something started making a very loud clicking / popping sound. Was that a centrifugal clutch slipping?

Just read through this thread out of morbid curiosity. I wasn't disappointed. Just makes me all the happier with my own automotive decisions. My '90 Dodge D250 Cummins has a 727 Torqueflite that has never been opened, and has 425K miles on it. I'm with @John Cooper regarding anything following the basic 3-speed automatics. I'll take the rock-solid reliability over a few extra mpg any day.

As for the CVT, my wife's 2015 CR-V has one. It reminds me of my minibike's centrifugal clutch, but at 150K, hasn't given us any problems. My son-in-law has a Nissan Ultima (gasp!) with the CVT, and I would have bet money on its early demise. Well, he's at 212K without a single issue. When I researched it, I found his to be the generation just prior to the ones with the infamous reputation (whatever year that is...I've long since forgotten). He got lucky, IMHO.

Good luck with your transmission, @Chris. Truly hope it all works out for you. (y)

I won’t be keeping the F150 much longer. I plan on getting rid of it this year. I’m going to drive a beater during the winter and my 1973 K10 during the nicer months.

I’m done with anything modern that I cannot work on myself. As much as I like this F150 (quiet, smooth, and loads of power) I just don’t want to own anything that is this sophisticated to service and this expensive to repair.

May I suggest a Powell...? ;)

The Honda CVTs seem to be fine. My dad's work car is a '15 Civic, the first year with the CVT IIRC. So far his has been fine with minimal maintenance at best, and he's pushing 290,000 miles on it. The Nissan CVT, well I've heard "shit" is a great descriptor. :sneaky:

I jinxed myself thinking this transmission fiasco was fixed.

Haven't had any issues for a while now. We took a trip this weekend to Rapid City, South Dakota with the kids to hit up some of the big stores (Scheels) they don't have here in Gillette.

The trip is roughly 2 hours and I averaged about 85 MPH the entire way. When driving there I had the transmission overheat twice when I was about 20 minutes outside Rapid City. I had to pull over, let it cool down, and then it was fine again.

It appears that this problem is only happening when driving for long periods of time at sustained highway speed.

I used my FORScan Lite iOS app and did some data logging today. The transmission didn't overheat once on my 20 minute drive into town today or on the way back. In fact, the transmission temps were more than fine. From our house on highway 50 into town I average 75 MPH for a sustained 15 minutes as well.

So again, the issue is only apparent on long, sustained, high speed highway travel at higher speeds.

What on earth could that be about?
