Ford 10R80 transmission woes

I recently bought a 94 Chevy k2500 . It's the last year without an airbag and has the simple TBI and the 4l80E . Like the TJ , the computer is limited to basically running the engine and shifting the transmission . If you have to replace several parts to find the culprit , it's not going to break the Bank and it's fairly easy to work on . It's comfortable to drive around and can tow everything I need it too .

At 375k miles I upgraded my 89 F350 7.3L IDI to a new 2016 F250 6.7L. It is quieter, pulls harder, and the back up camera is awesome for hooking up to a trailer. At 125k miles the 2016 hasn't given me any issues but I sure miss the simplicity of my 1989 truck.

The ZF8 in my Grand Cherokee which can also be found in many other vehicles is the only modern automatic that I don't mind. My friend had one in his F30 BMW 335i that was tuned to the moon and never an issue from the transmission.

I've driven so many modern vehicles where the transmission programming is awful, it ruins the driving experience. Some manufacturers are worse than others, and you can tell right away they programmed the thing to get to the highest gear as soon as possible for best fuel economy. My mom's Honda doesn't even like to downshift without practically putting your foot through the floor on a hill, yet will get to the highest gear at 30mph and lug the engine.

I guess the good news is that my 10R80 seems to be fine. It puked fluid a few times and gave me all these issues but since then they have gone away. In speaking with the transmission guy who did the fluid on mine he said that this is something he sees a lot. He said you have to fill them at a specific temperature (which he did) but even then sometimes they take more fluid and other times they take less.

Mine was apparently overfilled and thus it was causing issues. After puking out fluid twice, it's now been a few months without issues. I'm praying that this is the end of the transmission issues because I was scared for a bit there.

I still find it beyond stupid that the transmission has to have a re-learn procedure done on it after changing the transmission fluid. Thankfully the Russians came through with the FORScan software!

Overfilled sounds way more reasonable to me than the transmission being overly sensitive to fluid viscosity after a fluid change. If that was the case you would think the transmission would hardly function in the cold when fluid was thick and need to adapt quickly as the fluid warmed up. Also when you do a drain and fill with filter change you only change maybe 1/3 of the fluid.

On the receipt he put in 9 quarts of fluid. That was with the filter change.

He told me he's seen these things take anywhere from 6-10 quarts and it's always a guessing game.

Normally I'd be skeptical but this guy knows his stuff. He's 70 years old and you can tell he's been doing transmissions his whole life.

If you have to have a reliable auto trans. a Turbo Hydra Matic 400 couldn't give a crap about Dexron temps. , or even fill levels , it would puke any excess out .
The new automatic transmissions are so smart that they really suck in any actual real life application.

I find it humorous , when we celebrate doing a successful fluid change on a modern slush box . Glad you're doing a manual swap on the K-10 .
I won't speak about the F-150 or Nissan ...... :)

The 6 speed in the beamer is nice sometimes, but it is kind of annoying how little change in pedal input it takes for it to shift.

The 4l80 in the truck pretty much only shifts down when you really smash it down, it's more predictable and nice

Yep! Aside from the fact that I grew up driving manuals (and thus have a special place in my heart for them), I know it's almost always easier to service a manual transmission as generally there are just less things to break.

In addition, I can't tell you how annoying I find it that leaving a parking lot in my F150 I'm in 7th gear by the time I'm going 25 MPH. Absolutely unnecessary in every way. Sure, I can't feel it, but just watching the gear indicator and how often it shifts drives me nuts. I could understand a 4 or 5 speed auto, but 10 speeds? Don't tell me that's there for anything other than b.s. governmental regulations.

Wait until you drive a CVT. I drove a friend's small SUV with a CVT transmission and was ready to just steer it right into a telephone pole.

I pretty much put mine into sport mode whenever I remember. Which reminds me I want to try tow mode for awhile and see how I like that.

That was resolved in late 2022 with a new CDF drum that has a retainer machined in to prevent the bushing from moving.

If any rebuild is ever done on the 10R80, make sure they use the new style drum which seems to have resolved the problem.

Ford just recently rebuilt the 10R80 in my truck with all the new parts. Should be good to go for a while now.

This thread was about a 2019. Did you read the article? Lots of good information in it…

Well the Nissan Quest minivan we own has a CVT in it so you don't have to tell me, I already know.

Don't even get me started on that thing. You're gonna make me turn into Zorba!
