Hi, I'm a total rookie on this topic. I have a 97 2.5L and am wondering about the reason for this. Does it improve air flow, and does that give you some kind of performance boost? Did you find it to make a big difference? Always looking for ways to get the most out of my four squirrels ...

Factually? They make cool noises, don’t really help performance at all

Aside from major HP mods like forced induction/stroker/head work. The Jeep 4cyl and 6cyl just are what they are performance wise, not much to be done about it.

If you really believe in “cold air” looks a “windstar snorkel” mod. It is what I plan on replacing my K&N with.

Gotcha, thanks. I have a K&N right now too. Will look up Windstar Snorkel just out of curiosity, but you've succeeded in making me skeptical!

The Benefit of the windstar, is you still get factory level filtration, while pulling cold air from outside the engine bay (under the cowl) unlike a K&N that feeds massive amounts of “meh” filtered hot air from right next to the rad. The windstar also increases your water crossing ability, but I wouldn’t go that deep.

Nice, thanks. I actually didn't know that the colder air going in the intake would help.

It does, If you look around there's an in-depth explanation of how and why. generally Colder air = better combustion. that's me simplifying things a lot though

Problem is, there's not a lot of cooler air under the hood to get. However, it can be used more for a way to relocate the intake if you need the space on the fender, or have modified the fenders and are unable to mount the factory box.

Gotcha. Thanks again; this is super helpful. I'm going to keep it in mind for some day down the line, but for now it sounds like it shouldn't be a priority.
