Hey folks, the AC is blowing, it's just not blowing cold. I've never worked on an AC before. Where should I start / how should I proceed?

Start by checking the basics! Here are some steps to help you diagnose the issue:

Check the Refrigerant Level: Low refrigerant is a common reason for a/c not blowing cold. You can buy a refrigerant gauge from an auto parts store to check this yourself, or take it to a shop for a quick assessment.

Inspect the A/C Fuse: A blown fuse can affect the a/c system. Check the fuse box for any blown fuses related to the a/c.

Look for Leaks: Inspect the system for any visible signs of refrigerant leaks, usually around hoses and connections. Use a UV dye if necessary, which can be added to the system to help locate leaks.

Check the Compressor: Make sure the a/c compressor is engaging when you turn on the a/c. If you don’t hear it kick on, there might be an electrical issue or it could be faulty.

Condenser and Cabin Air Filter: Ensure that the condenser (located at the front of the radiator) isn’t blocked by debris. Also, check and replace your cabin air filter if it hasn’t been changed in a while; a clogged filter can restrict airflow.

System Reset: Sometimes, simply turning the a/c off and back on can reset system electronics.

The basic diagnostic is to measure the high and low side pressures. Mine was blowing 60 degrees and the pressure check verified low refrigerant charge. After adding refrigerant the vent temp is now 40 degrees.

One indication of low charge is the compressor will cycle on and off fairly rapidly. You can check that easily as a first step if you don’t have access to gauges.
