My son called me about an hour ago. He said his rear driveshaft sheared off. I told him to put it in 4H and get home. This is what he brought me.

Fortunately, I have a replacement because I swapped in a Dana 44 years ago.

We’ll need to get a new Spicer Dana 35 yoke, straps, and bolts. We’ll replace the ujoints on the replacement shaft just so everything is fresh. Hopefully have him back on the road by this weekend.

More like he’s gonna owe me the cost of a rear driveshaft. 🤣

You should see his cooling system. I told him he has to fix this or it’s going to go south real bad real soon. 😳

Ran a '91 Camaro in college and it was a heap in some attributes.

I remember listing off some of the issues (including a coolant system hose that was in need of replacement). One of my buddies tried to make fun of me because of my lower quality vehicle... Another buddy jumped in and stated ' at least he knows what's wrong with his vehicle'

You can probably guess the class of folks at the college. We all mix together but we all weren't of the same cloth.

I share this story because you're doing right by your son to teach him what's right and wrong with his vehicle. He needs to address what he can afford and know what he needs to save money to fix.

I know what you mean “not of the same cloth.”

He turned 19 last months. He’s an electrician apprentice working toward his journeyman license. We built his rig together (lift, shocks, track bars, body lift, mml, and 33’s. Did things like plugs, fluids, and the thermostat. He’s not “into” it like I am, but he’s just getting started in life. He’s courting a girl and I saw the hardtop and doors come off for awhile this summer. Made me smile they were enjoying it. He’s decently knowledgeable, but still calls dad.

If it were mine I’d have it spiffy in a jiffy. It’s got great bones.

Had a buddy who went the electrical apprentice route but then life changed his plans.

Do the apprentices still hold stripping parties for the spare copper to get the higher bare copper resale and split the funds?

Can't go wrong with a Jeep as his age for his lady friend  Muscle car or Jeep far into the same category of best vehicles for that age(y) Bees and honey

You'll get him there on the maintenance. This newer Gen just needs to grow up some. Lol

After discussing what he needs to fix the rear driveshaft on Monday, I bought $181 of it at the store and he bought $16 of it later. He’s an electrician apprentice and just coming off of 2 weeks of Covid. He’s still coughing all night. I hear him. I worked on it some last night and some today because he had to drive his sister’s car and she just got her license Monday (sweet 16). The plan was she could drive herself to school now. But that didn’t happen because of his rear driveshaft blowing. He just got over Covid and is barely able to function, So I did the u-joints last night and the rear pinion seal and yoke today. I sent him a text with pics today that said....

Used shaft $75
Various parts $200
Labor $120/hr x2.5 $300
Car rental $89/day x2 $178

Total: $753

He walked in the door about 4:45pm with $753 cash. I said, "No," and he insisted I take the cash.I insisted "no." Then I took $250 to cover my cost for parts and a small amount in labor to pacify him. Then we had a talk about what is coming as a married man trying to juggle so many things in life, so many expenses, so many issues. And I TOLD HIM TO take care of the JEEP or it will be mine and he can go buy a car himself to drive. All part of becoming a man. What a guy. 🇺🇸

You have a good on there! Taught him right!

Great fathering taking care of your recovering son. Love the accountability he wanted to give you.

On the topic of the Jeep, it may be camera angle but that SYE looks to be pulled down. DS/SYE angle could be the weak link of a bigger issue in the SYE.

Again, camera pics suck to get the perspective right, but just an observation.

No SYE on this one, just a slip yoke. No vibes I can tell.

Tracking no SYE - bad acronym on me. Meant the SY angle.

Not worried on vibes. The pic just looked like the SY (no E) yoke was pulling down on the shaft.

Could be the pic angle but it didn't look square on the SY shaft from the pic, but pics aren't a great tool. Wanted to point out what looks like a SY angle concern based on the pic.

You might not be feeling vibs but the two u joints must have matched angles to survive. The pic looks like the pinion is in line with the shaft. But then again, it could be the pic.

Yeah, I’ll take more pics when he gets home. In the pics above (also @FarFire70), I’m 99% sure I have the front axle raised with the jack. I raised it because when I removed the pinion seal diff fluid started coming out. That is very likely the reason the pinion is in line with the shaft. Sorry for any confusion. Good eye gentlemen.

Motor mounts swapped out again. I’m tired of my teeth rattling at every stop light in D with brake on. Will report back in a few weeks if they are better.

I’ve had…

Stock (no lift). Sold to @bobthetj03)
Brown Dog
MORE
Anchor (with RC aluminum spacers)

I used a vibration app placed near the Gear Selector to take readings before and after. Not the best tool, but perhaps of some value.

I do not want to do this job again. It was a PITA this time.

Make sure the frame horn isn't interfering with the engine bracket. I needed to trim the frame horn on mine to keep them from hitting

I trimmed mine back in 2017. 🙂

Another tip for people doing a MML is to cut the bolt on the passenger side MML closest to the motor to about 3/4” length. Otherwise it will interfere with the bolt head on the motor mount bracket (at least on an ‘05).

I don’t recall having any interference issues with the frame horn or the bolt on the passengers side when I did my MML 2 or 3 years ago.
