The design is bad for two reasons (at least!): The first is the form factor - physics is a bitch. The second is the brain deadness of the OS and "Apps". There's no good reason for much of that. Some "apps" are well written, many are not - which is similar to what has happened to computers. Part of THAT is the smartphone-ization of the PC, dumbing down everything to the smartphone level. Much of it is - as I've said before - code grinders who never passed CS-101 - I see software every damn day that has bugs in it that shouldn't exist, and those are often caused by poor programming practices that an CS-101 graduate can tell you aren't a good idea. I have stories.

As for what they're designed for - they're supposed to give the users access to the Internet "while on the go" as the saying goes. The usefulness of that is up for debate, I don't see the point myself. While they do do that, they do it poorly for the reasons cited above. Some of that could be fixed, much of it can not.

Life was so much easier before, smartphones, the internet and home computers.

As a kid growing up, all I thought about was squirrel hunting with my feist dog and fishing in the neighbors lake.

So much simpler times........

I love the Internet, or at the very least, what it used to be before all the ads, tracking and other crap (which I filter out and block). It has been ruined by smartphones, along with oh so much else. But at this point, I'd go back to pre-Internet just to get rid of the damn smartphone. The worldwide cost to society is just too high.

Even having been born in 83, I miss it like crazy. Maybe it wasn't as simple as when you grew up, but it felt so much simpler than the times we currently find ourselves in.

Hell, I was watching Jeremiah Johnson last night and found myself yearning for that. Of course I'd probably die pretty quick, but what a way to live!

I also despise video games, I lost 2 of my hunting, fishing buddies to the video game world. Once they got hooked it was all they could think of.

I have played video games back when in college, sucked at them because I wouldn't dedicate myself to them. All I wanted in college was a straight shooting 22 and a firm feeling woman

What's so bad about the form factor, and why do you keep bringing up physics? Also, since you so know so much about computers, you'd know that 8gb of ram is a very common size for most computers, and able to keep up with what most users require. Did you know that 8gb of ram can be found in most $400 phones, and my pixel 6 pro (paid $600) has 12gb? I'd say they are far from brain dead.

Yeah, that's really odd.

Generally the consensus amongst psychologists and intellectuals is that the big draw behind video games for men is due to the lack of camaraderie in our culture. It used to be that men found that in things like building, hunting, fishing, wars, etc.

Now that men have been emasculated by society they find that camaraderie in online gaming. It gives them the sense of conquering, building, and fighting with other men.

It's sad what men have been reduced to. Especially when you consider some of the great men who came before us. I often think of Lewis and Clark and all the frontiersmen who gave their lives exploring uncharted territory. It's a damn shame that we've been reduced to this.

Weak men create hard times.

ITS TOO FUCKING SMALL to be a useful computer. You can't have a decent computer with a 5 inch screen and no keyboard. I'd rather flip binary in via my IMSAI's front panel than to use a damn touch screen "keyboard".

It’s a form factor and capability that has sold way more than computers.
