I still don’t understand this. Maybe explain it a little more but why is a front locker so useful if all the weight is on the rear

Just a guess, but maybe because its helps get decent traction to the front end because if you have an open diff in the front and its hopping, power will be constantly switching from open wheel to open wheel. If you lock that, you could possibly eliminate that waste of traction and it could help pull you over the obstacle

I have a stock TJ on 31"s that will do things that most people feel are wonders but it won't come close to what my TJ on 35's can do.

Wonder is subjective!

I also love that jeep on 31"s and have no intent of changing it.

I don't know, Moab Rim? There's only about 6 trails harder than that in the Well's book. A couple higher up the list were slated, but didn't happen this trip. Only issues I had were hitting my rear CA frame brackets and hitting the bumper coming off ledges. As was said several times on the trail. You wouldn't even touch with 35's, it's that 1" (turns out to be 1.5" for me since my springs are 3.5" already).

I promise, you would have hopped on this one lol. Ask @taylormade73 who hopped even in his LJ doing the same line. It’s the large bumps in the middle of it that get you hopping.

There's another one on Hell's Gate that I haven't seen a video of on here, but I tried in 2019. It has a bump like that. It does mess things up at that steep of an incline. What does mrblaine say? If you're getting traction stay off the throttle. Not saying you wheel spinned or something, but that a 4:1 would have helped you there. What's your crawl ratio?

If a lower crawl ratio will reduce hopping then im glad I didnt go up that or I would have bounced off the cliff with my 3:73s and 231

I think I saw that one now that you mention it, his front end slid driver and he got in a real pickle. @jjvw has a 4:1. I should review the two videos again to see what your comparable speeds were.

Ive learned the limits of the rig and when to let off, especially since I didnt want to break anything. Once she hopped about a full tire rotation, I let off


This is what always confuses me, guys in our rigs who were built bigger than us struggled where we made with ease, and vise versa. Granted driver skill and good spotters are another aspect. I think im an okay driver, definitely the least skilled in our group, but yet I made tough spots look hard. Now I dont think I made it all through moab with dumb luck, but the smaller tires outwheeling do confuse me. Especially being open diffs and 3:73s on my 5speed. I dont think my lift attributed to "stability" though since im on a 3.5" SL and 1.25" BL with a flat TT

If you go to JV or Arizona where you’re climbing off camber and all 4 tires are on different boulders or one of them is in the air and there’s another one right on your diff then every inch of clearance is valuable and lockers are a must.

There are way to many variables. One must see what needs improvement then work on those issues.

Absolutely, JV is hands down my favorite place to go wheel, and I plan to go continuously once my jeep is ready, have more experience, and I can get the time to go down. I know what my "build aspect" is for it and how I want it to perform without completely getting ffed up, but what it is now just wont cut it. The sad truth is that there is no one build that does everything perfectly. I got to see that crystal clear at moab

My conclusion after 19 pages is "Why should I go to 35's when all I need is a rear frame lift?" just another can of worms.

What about the diff, control arm mounts and rear shock mounts? Before I outboarded my rear shocks it was like 3 diffs to hang up on rocks. The rear shocks can be moved, but not diffs or control arm mounts. Tire diameter is the only way add clearance.
