Is this frame rust fixable?

Oh damn... that doesn't look good.

Fixable? Yes. But quite a project, and you'd better be prepared, because I can guarantee you there's plenty more rust like that hiding where you probably can't see it.

I HATE RUST.

Fixable as in using safe-t-caps and the like?

Me too brah (is that official TJ forum slang yet?). I hadn't even noticed anything that bad while its been up on the lift because the outer layer was still intact. It wasn't until I started banging on it that everything flaked of...

From the pics it isn’t really bad but it’s something you have to take care of. I have this in like a 5 inch area in the back left rail, took hours to clean it out and soak it in fluid film, guess if it keeps bothering eventually me I will just cut it out and weld up a new plate in there since I’m going into welding anyways. But yeah if it’s not terrible chipping hammer/chain, wire brush, black paint and loads of fluid film to stop the rust process

I went thru the same debate when we found our TJ frame was toast; I found a place online that sells galvanized TJ frames, and man did I want one, but they were $5K. We opted for the SafeTCaps, at about $1000 total for both sides (because I did all the work myself, and it was a real ball buster!) That was 2 years and lots of on/off road miles ago, and I inspect the frame regularly and seems to be holding up fine so far. BUT - I keep an eye out on CL for frames and one day I'll likely snatch one up just to have on hand in case our frame ever fails. Hope it doesn't happen, but nice to be ready if it does.

Depends on how far the rust has penetrated through the frame. If there's actually holes in the frame from rust, that means it's bad, and you'd need Safe-t-Caps. However, if there's just a lot of rust, the thing to do is going to be to get all of it off with a wire wheel / grinder and then prep and paint the surface.

I'm fairly certain if I hit directly in front of the passenger rear LCA, I'd break through the hole in the picture I posted of the underside earlier^
I guess that means it's pretty bad news

The only type of rust that can be permanently fixed is surface rust. Once it gets to rot, I really believe that your days are numbered. No amount of fluid film, no amount of internal coating, and no amount of POR15 will fix rot. If you could get into the middle of the frame, completely remove all chunks, and sand down to bare metal, you might be able to fix frame rot. But the fact of the matter is that you can't get into the center of the frame. You can try to prolong the useful life of that particular frame, but you will never fix rot.

That is the same situation I'm in with my Jeep. Your Jeep needs immediate frame attention if you can make holes appear with a hammer. I would go with some safety caps in your situation. If you plan on keeping the Jeep forever, safety caps will probably give you a pretty long time to decide what to ultimately do with your Jeep. The only issue you'll have is selling your Jeep if you ever want to. There are plenty of rust free TJ's in GA, which means it would be a tough sell with safety caps installed.

Too bad this guy cut off all the suspension mounts. He had a complete Currie AR in the front, and was asking $400 for the whole set-up. Then he removed the mention of the AR in the ad, and dropped to $300, and now $100. It's in Washington state, so shipping would be a killer.

This listing is for a 1997 Jeep Tj frame that was part of a project that just stalled out and is now taking up too much space.

The frame is in great shape but has all of the motor and suspension brackets cut off with the exception of the front trac bar mount and the skid plate/trans mount.

Shoot me an offer! Worst I can say is no! I want this thing gone quick!

LOL Sorry, man. It's still for sale. If he hadn't cut off all the suspension brackets, I'd of brought it home. Still, for the rust belt boys, it might be worth looking into. I can get the full contact info, if someone wants to talk with the guy...

Annnnndddd I looked at DaveysJeeps and of course he has the frame I needed all this time. Why couldn't he have had it before I spent 3 months searching the entire country for one?!

Ain't that always the way? Screw it. You got a good one. It's yours. You own it. When the work is done, you're done. Celebrate, brother! You're gonna have a rust-free frame! Look at you! 👍

The fact that Davey wants 2.3x the price I paid for mine makes it a little easier to swallow I guess. Still wish I had bought a completely straight one (mine was out 1"), but what can you do. It is already powdercoated so I guess it is going under my Jeep at this point!

My brother lives in Seattle. I'd have him pick it up for me and hold onto it for a while until he moves back south, I'm just not too sure when he's coming back. $100 is DIRT cheap tho

Yep, that's bad news. That calls for a Safe-T-Cap for sure.
