LJ handles worse after 4" RockJock and Fox 2.0 install

In theory spring rate could affect ride quality; however in practice and considering the OEM spring perches locations the manufacture is working with the same weight vehicle, with the same ride height requirements, and the max and min overall length that can physically be installed. Thus you end up with a spring rate across the board that is similar and can be considered constant. Thus the only variable that can be changed is the damping. That is the point that needs to be made.

Also, please don't say my point is the same point as Josh's, even if just implied. I prefer to not be associated 🤣

Josh keeps telling people who believe springs affect ride quality to remove the shocks and go for a ride. I had them off anyway. I forgot and went on a short drive to get a coffee where my daughter works and was like, “man, this thing drives weird.” Then I remembered, “no front shocks!” So, I drove it a few more times without front shocks just to experiment.

It is a valuable experience. I drove around for a few weeks without any shocks while they were out getting new reservoirs. The ride was like driving a soft comfortable cloud. However, the more I drove, the more bizarre and chaotic handling characteristics I discovered. The scariest moment was while traveling about 25mph on a straight road. There was an extended bumpy section that suddenly threw the Jeep sideways halfway into the next lane. Fortunately I was all alone.

I drove for a month without shocks while Wayne re-tuned my shocks two years ago. I agree that it was a valuable experience for learning what the springs do (and don't do).

I felt like I was riding a beach ball (or slinky) going down the road, and things could quickly get sketchy if I made any sudden movements. Running only rear shocks wasn't nearly as bad, but you still notice it a bunch when you brake and gas it from a stop.

Takeaway: I learned that this playground equipment would ride more pleasant and stable with some nicely tuned Fox DSC shocks...outboarding would make them even more stable (and boring). Pleasant, stable, and boring is a nice upgrade in the TJ.

Apparently I had a different childhood, because it is obvious to me how it would ride with no shocks and I see no value, just risk, with someone driving public roads at speed with coil springs and without shocks. And this coming from someone who did some dumb stuff and happy there was no cameras around.

Those just get shared over beer and around a campfire, not typed for record.

Beer? You make me feed you expensive bourbon to get you talking!

🙂

I took Josh’s advice a while back and ran my rig without my shocks.

It was really, really, really rough…

🤔

… and for some reason the rig was really, really, really low.

😉

I’ve learned that many young dumb people live long enough to become old dumb people regardless of experience.

You were supposed to leave the springs installed
