What gear ratio should I install in my Jeep Wrangler TJ / LJ? (and other re-gearing FAQs)

Chris is there anything wrong with running 4.56 gears with 35s for my daily driven 4.0 TJ?

Since you have a 5-speed manual, that wouldn’t be too bad. If you’re installing new gears, maybe consider going deeper, but in my opinion it wouldn’t be worth the money to go from 4.56 to 5.13 or 4.88 if the 4.56 are already installed.

I run 4.10s on 35s with the 6-speed and have no desire to go any deeper. That said I’ve done a lot of modification to get more power/torque/efficiency out of the engine.

Thank you sir for your intelligent and thoughtful response.

Yes, questioning is a trend. Wanting to know why is also a trend. Intelligent people question everything, Sheep just follow! Sorry if questioning offends you! I thought the whole point of such forum was to exchange ideas and learn.
There is nary a thing wrong with either of those. What is beyond wrong is asking a question with low effort. No one can tell you a fucking thing about a reasonably accurate solution for gears without knowing what axles and transmission is in the vehicle. They are silly for doing it and you are silly for the low effort question.

So, another way to put that is you are the anomalous outlier that has little relevance to his situation???

Mr. Blaine, I hear your anger and frustration with the question and I am glad to have that dialog with anyone who wishes to have a dialog. Anyways, my rig has a 4.0 with NV3550 5 speed on 35s. Daily driven, never tow with it. Motor is 100% stock. You don't have to answer if the questions make your blood boil or cause any other psychological distress.

Well, to be fair, people don't read long threads because they're often looking at a phone and it's difficult trying to find a summary post, even if there rarely is one.

All I need is for you to put in the effort you expect in return. If you want a half assed answer, ask a half assed question. Just trying to learn you how to get better information.

So, to set you on your path to enlightenment, however dim, what speeds do you typically drive on the highway and what mythology do you subscribe to regarding engine RPM?

Perhaps. Mostly to show it isn’t intolerable in all cases, but that it might depend on his particular situation.

Here is my simple opinion. Do you already have 4.56 installed? If so, just run it unless it gives you a problem. If you have something less than 4.56 right now, skip 4.56 and go right to the standard gear ratio recommendation of 5.13.

There are diminishing returns on going deeper, but there still are returns. With a stock motor and a 5-speed, I’d be willing to shell out cash to go from 4.10 to 5.13, but I’d be hesitant to pay the same amount to get 5.13s if I already had 4.56 installed.

It costs exactly the same in parts and labor to regear no matter what ratio you choose.

Mr. Blaine, thank you for your polite answer and question. I drive right around 75mph on the freeway, my rig is a 5 speed as I have said, and the RMPs usually around 2000-2200 in fifth gear. In your opinion, are 4.88 a good all around gear ratio for 35s? Why would you choose 4.88 over 4.56? More power, keeping RPMs higher? Lets not get into mythology and just have a mature conversations, if possible.

What engine RPM do you think it is "happy" at when you are running 75 in OD?

To ponder- 2000ish is not enough RPM to maintain speed on other than very flat roads. You have to downshift for minor increases in elevation or push the throttle more than is prudent to try and maintain 75.

There is no such thing as a good all around gear. There are two schools of thought. Gear it for driving up hills at tolerable RPM and a slightly lower MPH and geared for flat land with lower RPM in OD. Or, more pleasant driving in OD with the RPM much higher but a much lower scoot up hills with higher RPM.

4.56 on the left, for comparison, 5.13 on the right. Roughly, I can get it closer if you give me an exact RPM and MPH that you have now.

More name calling huh!!
We can't just have an adult conversation without labels and name calling? If I knew all the answers to my Jeep questions, why would I bother? Does your post inspire enthusiasm or does it deflect it? You are getting some help. If you could just respond intelligently to post #472 then you could make some progress toward learning something.
