I probably gonna get a lot of hate for that… but I’m very likely gonna sell my beloved 2002 TJ after 7 years of “Jeep Life” in exchange for this new EV - the iCar V23 - once available here in Thailand (hopefully within this year).

Bought the TJ with 24,000 miles, now at 43,000 miles. Over the years, I’ve replaced nearly every part on the TJ with OEM parts imported from the US. I even got a fresh paint job inside and outside, using the original paint codes (getting the original sticker sets alone set my back like $500). I’m a DIY guy and kind of love working on it - but maybe that’s just me trying to romanticize constantly fixing something.

About a year ago, I bought a Surron electric bike and absolutely love it - the acceleration is crazy and it's zero maintenance compared to the 50 different fluids and gaskets I have to keep up with on the Jeep - besides other parts failing over the years. The TJ is my only vehicle (besides the bike), so based on the mileage I ran you can see that owning two cars absolutely doesn't make any sense.

The only thing I’ll probably gonna miss is the soft top - I always drive half-open "sunrider" style, though honestly here in Thailand I kind of have to, since the AC doesn’t stand a chance in this climate. That's also why in 7 years I only had the besttop completely open probably 3 times - otherwise you're toast in the sun. I even considered getting the electric one, but they don't make those for the TJ - probably to my luck or I would have thrown another 3 grand at it.

Still struggling with the thought of letting go of the TJ I’ve put so much time and work into...

The only silver lining is that I’ll probably still get around $40,000 for my Sahara. They’re extremely rare here - especially in this condition, and we’ve always had 150–200% import tax on vehicles – which also makes parts incredibly expensive. A brand new Wrangler is about $130.000 here lol

the iCar is supposed to start around $15.000 and $20.000 for the 4x4 AWD version.. but nothing confirmed yet..

If someone made an actual 4wd electric, it'll probably outperform any ice propelled one. I'm not going to see that in my lifetime though. Not in Australia with the distances we travel here just to get around the corner. No way to charge an ev in the outback.

I saw a LOT of Australian's comment on articles/youtube reviews of that car, that they all would love it.. it supposedly should come to you next year... and it is an actual 4x4 but max 500km range .. probably not enough for your distances?

there is also a pickup truck version, but not sure if they gonna export that one too

19,000 miles in seven years? You seem a good fit for an EV. 😉

Yeah… I live on a small island that's about 8 miles in diameter. The furthest I’ve probably driven in a day is around 15 miles, round trip. 😄
That means if the EV has a 300-mile range, I’d probably only need to charge it once a month.

We don’t have any public chargers here, but on a regular 220V wall socket, it would probably take about 26 hours to charge from 0–100% (though no EV owner ever actually does that) .. a friend recently got the BYD sealion 7 here and has no issues at all charging it at home on a normal socket.. its like a Tesla Model Y - just half the price. 600hp. The iCar has only 220 - like the TJ

I've got a 45 liter aux tank. This gives me a range of about 850km on road or 500km in low gear territory. But I rarely travel without my two 20 liter jerry cans in the back.

yeah and then there is me thinking twice if I really take the "far" 10minutes, 6 miles, trip to the restaurant or rather order food delivery.. 6 miles is probably just getting out the driveway for you over there 😅

So 35's or 40's? :D

It's your money and your Jeep, so by all means do what you want. Those look a bit like something I would expect from Land Rover. Though I'd bet that a new icar will be scrap metal before your TJ.

As long as the infrastructure supports it
Do what works for you

I cant imagine resale value being good tho, and also mechanics if theres an issue that arises??

things to think about….

Are you an Expat, retired to Thailand??
Just curious what island? Koh Phi Phi Don?

I got my Jeep (kids Jeep actually) from a State Dept Security contractor that retired to Thailand. Hes in Kanchanaburi tho, mainland

Trying to familiarize myself better with all the available options to relocate there myself

how do you like it??

feels like a TJ on steroids. drives much more comfortable, turbocharged, and absolutely quiet. acceleration is sick. 100% electric. 4 wheel drive. driving possition and view is exactly the same - even the square side mirrors. I love that thing already. turning radius is also like half of the TJ.

Turbocharged?
