Toyota lights on your TJ! Cheap, quality LED alternative

I've got a set for my 71 chevelle sitting in the garage currently. Been running them on my jeep for a couple years with the hella bulbs.

My '71 Cutlas has 4 headlights, so not as easy of an install as your car. But then again, I never found those headlights to be lacking, and I've been driving that car for nearly 35 years.

Just picked my set up on Friday for $17.83 picked up from my local dealer. Can’t beat the price. The headlights from the original owner had a brutal hotspot in the middle and I was constantly getting flashed which resulted in me driving with just the oem fogs around town.

Is the preferred bulb upgrade still the 100/80w hella h4 bulb? I’m wanting to stick with halogen as I’m not a fan of the LED color temp on the TJ.

So I got a set of these yesterday and have been trying to get them mounted. The headlight retaining ring will not go down far enough to set the screws in place. I have not heard of anyone with these issues so am I doing something wrong? I see that these stick out more to the front than the ones I had in there but no no other difference. Any thoughts?

Devil Dog, I do not remember having that issue. Here is a shot of my Jan 2022 glass so you can compare the markings.

Make sure that nothing inside the headlight "bucket" is protruding and contacting the back of the housing prematurely.

On mine its the ring that attaches the light to the housing, it doesn't want to drop all the way down from front to back if you know what I mean. The headlight is fine in the bucket, it's the ring on the headlight itself.

Make sure the tabs on the back of the glass housing are lined up well, and not sitting crooked and holding it out of reach

The only logical explanations I can think of for that is that your headlight glass is molded differently, or your trim ring is different. Did you compare the markings on your glass to mine?
Here are pics of the backs from an Ebay listing. These in the listing have the same markings as mine.

These look the same as mine on the back. I don’t know if mine are ecode though I don’t imagine it changes anything

Make sure the bulb housing is properly seated in the headlight bracket. There are tabs that should fit into the cut outs and the bulb housing will naturally slip around while you’re mounting the retainer rings. You’ll know they are properly seated if the bulb housing doesn’t spin at all. Maybe post some close up and further out pictures of your issue.

@DevilDogDoc were you able to get it installed?

Also, what is everyone doing on the driver side stock headlight connector that is no longer in use to prevent any corrosion? I was thinking of getting a male connector to plug into it, cutting the wires down, and putting some heat shrink tubing over the wires. That’s my ounce of prevention.

No they are aimed right. That’s my point, since I couldn’t get that ring all the way around it evenly it looks weird the drivers side especially but they are level at least.

I did get it in. On one side I ground the rim of the headlight down and got it to fit further down. On the other I just left it how it was, it sticks out more but I don’t care that much. Left I ground right I did not.

What are you grinding to make these fit? They should fit the stock bucket like any other sealed beam.

The glass is more squared off on the edges vs rounded, like older style sealed beams. That can make getting that grill bezel/ trim on tricky for the top outer corners.

The metal ring that holds the light to the adjustment housing should fit and should go on like normal.

I ground the metal edge around the glass on the back side. I should have taken a picture but on my IPF lights the retaining ring sits all the way down, flush with the edge. On these it would not as it’s a few millimeters bigger. The ring would go down on one side but would stick up on the other side. I must be the only person to have this issue it seems like.

might be a dumb question but do these come in a set or do i have to order two to get two headlights? i checked a few websites that sell them and none of them clarify.

Yeah that’s not normal and there is typically enough room in the light mounting ring for this not to be an issue. Those ring mounting holes are somewhat slotted anyway.
