I don’t think that gear strength should be a main factor when considering 4.88s and higher.

The main counter-argument to the “low gear ratio -> weak” people is that the mechanical advantage of the lower gearing actually puts less stress on the gears.

Factors like tire size, driving style and gear setup are much more important in the strength discussion. Gear manufacturer is also important, like Jeremy said.

For what its worth, I'm still definitely doing 5.38's when its time whether they are in TJ axles or JK axles is the question.
