Hi guys, I've read as many warn winch post on this forum I could. Ever since getting my jeep I've always wanted one, and from what people have said on here it seems they are the cream of the crop.

I have been watching Facebook Marketplace for about a year, and today I scored this one for 250 bucks. I wasn't able to test it before buying it so for the price I decided to take the gamble. After talking to the PO, it was some kind of factory Land Rover winch, and he assured me before he put it in his basement for 3 years, it worked. It came with a remote, landrover bag, two hooks, a set of wires, and the winch itself. No fairleed.
if anyone has more information on this unit, I'd love to hear it. The date code sticker is broken off, unfortunately.

I want to mount the winch as far back towards the grill as possible on the OEM front bumper. From what I read on here, a raised winch plate seems to be the way to go to get the winch above the sway bar. If anyone has any recs on a budget-friendly mount that will get the winch as far back as possible, let me know.

I quickly connected the winch to the battery and tried to use the remote, no luck, so I am going to take a closer look this week and try to test the motor itself first. I will keep you guys updated.

I have a Warn XD9000 that I rebuilt. Bought for $225. Had some issues at the posts and just needed some love. I’d contact Warn with the numbers and see exactly what it is, and @Blackjack can walk you through diagnosing the problems. I’d take the cap and motor off, and remove the engagement end, check the gears and grease if necessary. There’s a specific grease. Warn will hook you up. Clean everything. If the motor needs to be tested, find someone with a growler who can bench test it. They’ll probably think it’s pretty cool and be glad to do it. 4 solenoids in the top portion over the drum. The wiring diagram is out there on the interwebs. Only use Warn solenoids if you need them. They are awesome winches. Congrats.

I don't know how much commonality there is between the OP's winch and the Warn M8000 that I have, but in case it helps:

https://www.doubleveil.net/jeep/twenty-four.htm

Caveat: If you read any of it, read ALL of it, it stretches over several pages and there's stuff I learned along the way, some of it the hard way. Some of the things I did are also controversial, some swear by them, some swear at them! YMMV and all that. You might as well install one of @Blackjack 's vent kits while you're at it - I did so much later than the time period documented here.

Pretty cool find with all the kit with it. Definitely needs a good tear down and cleaning. Couple good threads on here and do not be afraid to message me if you need help. The serial number and date is stamped in the clutch housing but you will have to be careful as that is where the corrosion is.

@Blackjack Thank you! I definitely will if I get stuck, these things are pretty fun to work on!

@Zorba Thanks for the M8000 Thread the motor looks very similar so this will be super useful to me, and it's very well written up!

@JMT Thanks, i've never heard of a growler before but after looking it up, seems pretty sweet. I'm definitely going to pull this thing apart and checkout the gearbox, good call on the warn grease.

I appreciate everyone's quick responses to this, as I continue to research these, its quickly turning into one of my favorite projects.

Last night I disassembled and cleaned all the connections I could get to. I also tested each solenoid by applying 12v and measuring the resistance across the main lugs, all of them had pretty crappy resistance readings around 2-4 ohms. Looks like I could get new Warn OEM solenoids for about 35 bucks each, ive been told to avoid the amazon no name $13 dollar ones. Credit to Winch outdoors on youtube, I followed along with this video: Link.

(Im working out of the living room so bear with me)

My next steps are:
  • Check the motor using some jumper cables.
  • Unspool the wire if possible.
  • essentially disassemble the main components: drum, r gearbox, motor and inspect the internal components.
  • Somehow check if the remote is working properly
Thanks guys. Really appreciate everyone helping me out on this.

Ok, so update. The motor did not work in either direction when I tried to jump it.

I got the cable manually unspooled (PITA).

Got it split, and this thing is in a lot rougher shape than I'd like to see.

The gearbox was also locked up. Tomorrow I am going to get the motor pulled off.

I'd upgrade the winch to a modern contactor and remote mount it under the hood.

While I know the correct answer is buy Warn parts... they're offshoring everything anyways.

My new M8000 went through four motors before I retired it to my wife's JK and replaced it with a 9.

Here's what I used on my M12000 to replace the solenoids...

And after Warn refused to honor the warranty on my wireless remote control I bought some of these...they work so good I've since added them to four of my winches.

The remotes are small enough so I added 1" magnetic tape to the back so I don't lose them.

Will the brake assembly come out of the drum ? Looks pretty rusty. Have one that I cannot get out, even with beating it nearly to death.

At some point, like if need a new motor; it just is not worth fixing. (parts are good to have) When you can buy a good one for 400 or so. I could be wrong. D

Not a nice picnic table job either !!

(just looked on FB marketplace up in Boston for a winch and they all look rough because of the salt evidently may have to look further south !! I will trade for a hardtop !!)

Pop the end cap from the motor and let’s have a peek.

@Blackjack Next step will be popping the cover, I could feel those bolts wanting to snap on me so I will need to pull out all the tricks.

@tnjeepguy Unfortunately i'm stuck working out of my apartment on weekdays, cant make it to the shop until the weekends. After looking on marketplace for about a year my experience is everything is pretty thrashed, or its $900+ for a nice one.

Maybe ill need to take a road trip down south and just buy a bunch of stuff. That being said if you look long enough in the summer months you can definitely find a nice hardtop for $300-$400 bucks up here because it's the only part that doesn't rot out on all these NE jeeps, tons of rotted frame partouts.

@macleanflood Thanks for the info on the upgrades will definitely check them out if I can get this thing in a promising state.

When you replaced your motors did you use a Warn OEM replacement? These "Warn compatible" motors are very tempting for $100: Link

I have become extremely skeptical of any companies OEM parts recently. Realistically nobody is making these in the US anyway, and the reviews look decent enough, could be worth it if this winch would otherwise get junked.

I did order a winch plate and fairlead, but i'm definitely open to exchanging the fairlead with a hawse if I switch to a synthetic line.

Thanks for the info everyone!!!

When you replaced your motors did you use a Warn OEM replacement?

I drove my winch to Portland ~2 hr drive and dropped it off at their warranty counter. So technically all the motors were sourced from Warn.

Question is...was that a Warn quality issue or did I fail my winch?

I've since started making sure I winch off the first couple layers of rope on the drum and use recovery rings for force multiplication and as a way to use up more line on shorter pulls.

All right guys, the results are in... Drum roll...

This motor is absolutely cooked.

The original Armature is covered in corrosion, comutator is basically smooth, the brushes were all free to slide, but one of them broke in half. The rear bearing was rusted in place.

My autopsy found that the weep holes meant for draining were completely clogged.

As much as It pains me to say, I think I have more faith in the $100-$170 amazon motor than my abilities to rebuild this thing.

Here are my options:

$130 DB electrical option

$100 amazon option

$234 Warn OEM replacement

The good news is, the bearing in the mounting plate feels great, and I was able to attack it with a pick and some sandpaper and clean up the mounting surfaces and weeping holes,. I also removed the square nuts and will be replacing those.
