WranglerFix PCM and HPTuners

@Wranglerfix I'm have a hell of a time chasing down some problems with my 97 4.0 swapped into a 98 2.5 TJ. I heard you are the guy to talk to. I am stuck, I recently did a frame off refresh while swapping a 97 4.0 onto a 98 2.5 frame because I already had everything here. I got it about buttoned up but I'm chasing a gremlin. The engine runs great, starts right up, maybe some slight missing, but no codes for the most part. When I take off to drive it drives great, I get about a mile down the road and it starts surging and bucking usually after slowing down and speeding back up. The weird thing is that I can put it in neutral while rolling then kill the engine and restart it, then it's instantly fine for another mile. I've replaced most of the sensors even got the ntk upstream O2 sensor, the downstream 02 sensor is running over 1.0 and the shrtftb1s2 is 99.2. My live data is reading an average of 18 on the spark advance, 230psi on the map, and about 40-50psi oil pressure at idle all are high. The only code I get sometimes is p0171 system too lean bank 1 it's not consistent tho it's after driving it and leaving it running for a really long time restarting it to get back home. I am still throwing parts at it and I great it might be the PCM, I still have the PCM from the 98 also but it needs to be reprogrammed in order to try it because it was 2.5. I can't find a vacuum leak anywhere. I'm at my wits end and hopefully at the finish line of a year long project. I've crawled all of the forums and can't figure it out. Any help would be loved!

There's some personal stuff going on ATM and I don't have the time to do a bunch of tinkering so I dumped the factory VE tables back in it for the drive. I also had to reduce some timing in the top end of the timing table. I kept getting audible knock around 80kPa at 3600rpm on the interstate.

It pretty much held 70mph for the majority of the 3 hour trip without issue.

Im debating a header since I have the later model two-piece cast manifolds unlike @Jezza with the older 4.0L. Probably go with aFe to finish off a full set of their exhaust.

I made adjustments to the transmission calibration tables this evening. Upped most of the shift RPM by 10% and it didn't affect it.

I then added another 10% to the 1-2 shift table and it also made no difference.

Any suggestions?

The change in the shift points that actually took are really nice. I need to test the 1-2 shift again this evening and see if it's adjusted? It needs some tweaking in the low throttle 2-3 and 3-2 changes but I'll need to do some logging in the areas I feel it lacks and see if I can get it where I want it to be.

Does anyone have the info on what terminal pin crimps I need to be able to add wires to my ECM connectors?

Does anyone have the info on what terminal pin crimps I need to be able to add wires to my ECM connectors?

Jump pins 11 and 12 together on connector C1 (farthest left). As to the wires I used, I had one of the OEM terminal kits that had wires and connectors in it.

It might be possible to do with just a paperclip.

Thanks! That gives me a start!

I'm looking for the actual wire ends and seals for the connectors. I have something to experiment with but I need to add two wires.

@Juggernaut hit what is probably happening in your situation.

TJs do not have lean cruise, though it is possible to enable Multiple Displacement System (MDS, also known as cylinder deactivation) via HP Tuners. I've never experimented with it and would probably caution against it.

They do have a limited amount of deceleration fuel cut-off (DFCO) programmed in for emissions reasons, but the fuel economy part of it is pretty much disabled via the tune. I have experimented with enabling the more aggressive version of this extensively, and find it makes a big difference in engine braking and in fuel economy overall. The problem is HP Tuners doesn't have access to the one parameter I need to prevent the engine from stalling out in very select scenarios.

If I could figure out the stalling issue I would absolutely recommend enabling DFCO for everyone, but I can't recommend it given the stalling quirk for safety reasons. (I still use it regardless.) It's possible this tuning quirk is unique to the Wranglerfix PCMs as opposed to all NGC3 PCMs, but I have no way to know for sure. If I could get access to professional PCM software I'm pretty sure I could fix it right away.

(For anyone reading this thread for info on the Wranglerfix, there is nothing wrong with the Wranglerfix PCM. The stalling is a direct result of me messing with the DFCO tune with HP Tuners.)

Update: Finally figured out DFCO!

Hello all.
Recently my 2005 Rubicon PCM started to fail so i ordered a @Wranglerfix PCM.
I had a @Flyin' Ryan Performance tune installed on the OEM PCM with HP Tuners, now i want to put the tune on the new PCM, first, i know i have to buy new credits for the new PCM, i bought 2, but when trying to license the new PCM won't let me.
I have contacted HP Tuners support and they say the new PCM don't have VIN or Serial number, but when i ordered WranglerFix PCM it asked for the VIN.
Traed with both stable and beta versions of VCM Suite.

Anyone knows how can i register the new PCM on HP Tuners?.

Regards

Mariano

You might just be running into an issue with the wifi connection or need to perform a resync interface in VCM editor. The laptop has to have a wifi signal to register and resync and then often this would clear up.

Hello. Thanks for the advice. I have full wifi signal at my garage. Sure that's not the problem.

Yes, but a problem with resync interface will give that sort of issue with the licenses registering. I'd also susggest reading the new PCM first and storing that. Mark has mentioned that he applies some minor adjustments to the standard profile and it would be helpful if you need to go back.

I almost mentioned one other problem. I've had some trouble getting the MPVI3 to seat really well on the ODBII port lately and tonight I got something to the effect of no interface found. Eventually I got it on the pins just right. I had a bit of an issue with the MPVI scanning a friend's Camaro the other day, so I need to take a look and see if there is an issue with the positions of the pins on the device.

Emailing the good fellow at Wranglerfix isn't going to hurt you either.
