Got my new to me warn 9.5ti mounted and the $8 winch cover I had on my smitty doesn’t fit. I’ve got WRG line, fairlead and thimble. The sun down here can be brutal.

1) do I need a cover?
2) if so, any recommendations?

The warn ones fade, my Bartact didn’t.

I haven’t run one in a couple years as I got annoyed by it. One cap on my Zeon is fading pretty bad but other than that it hasn’t hurt anything leaving it exposed.

Someone here recommended this one:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0894CCTXW/?tag=wranglerorg-20
It will eventually fade, I'm on my second one, the first one lasted a year and a half. It costs $16 - when it gets tatty, buy a new one. I had a different one that didn't even make it 9 months here in Florida - so this one I'm glad to replace it every 18 months or so...

Recently got my 2nd of this, too. It's cheap and does the job. I don't love it, but it's good enough.

I bought a neoprene winch cover from Amazon, two years ago. It's faded, but still doing the job. It's been subjected to ice, slush, and freezing temps.

Amazon Winch Cover $17

I thought the sunlight UV would degrade synthetic winch line?

Let me go research that...

Yup.

All fiber and rope companies agree that prolonged UV exposure will damage UHMWPE fibers to some extent. In some cases up to a 20% strength reduction can occur in under a year. Take a look at the UV data charts and decide for yourself. The simple fix is to cover your winch line from the sun.

Wow. 20% reduction in a year!

That's not at all surprising - esp. in Florida!

It's true, and one of the reasons we're putting 25k lb line on an 8k lb winch. Fortunately, the UV degraded line is good at blocking more UV, so the rate of degradation decreases with time.

I’ve run the 60 buck warn ones and I love it. Got it to keep the light off the line to some extent but mostly for all the salt and ice that gets all over the front in the winters driving everyday in idaho. It’s kinda faded but really just the red tag on the side. No rips or cracks. Still on after 3 years of running it and daily driving it with it parked in the sun. Now my plate kinda covers most of it anyways for those winters I think it was worth not having the plug or line covered and frozen.

I do not have a cover. I don't think a cover is necessary. My line has a sleeve that covers the first layer so UV isn't an issue.

I highly recommend coversandall.com!

I gave them dimensions and a forum logo png to print onto the cover and they made and shipped it for around $40 if I remember correctly. I’ve had it for almost 4 years, not garage-kept. It’s seen a rare Louisiana freeze, a healthy amount of scorching sun, and an all-you-can-eat buffet of bug splats, and is still in fantastic condition. I don’t believe it has faded or deteriorated at all, and the WTJF logo looks as good as new. I was a little off with the dimensions and the safety thimble sticking up makes an odd shape to fit over, but it still works well.

My 9.5ti is hiding under a Milemarker cover. Great quality and fits very well.
Think this was designed for their hydro winches.

I would think that value is based on a rope thats just outdoors in the sun all its life.

Mine is in a garage and gets driven enough to see no more than 200 hours of sunshine in a year, and probably much less if I consider when the jeep is facing north, or West in the morning, or east in the afternoon, and shaded by the grill. I'm not worried about it.
