What winch do you use?

I've got a Warn 9.5ti. And my wife won a 9.5ti at a raffle in Panamint Valley, but I had to carry the box too.

Just bought a SuperWinch Tiger Shark 9500 SR, which is sitting in the garage until my new bumper comes in.

Came across this beauty and made arrangements to bring it home for the front of my LJ. The new Smittybilt X2O 10k Synthetic sitting in the garage is now going to find a home on the wife's JL.

Another warn xd9000 here, it came on the tj when I bought it. Looked new'ish, cable had that never been unspooled look although I'm pretty sure it's older I think the PO moved it from his prior jeep and never even hooked up the electrical and was missing the remote so I picked up the wireless setup. I've used it a couple of times and it seems to be doing what it supposed to. I also carry a little XRC4000 with synthetic line mounted to a bracket with two hooks that I can use anywhere I need powered by a battery pack. The warn has steel cable on it now, when I can get a deal on some synthetic rope I'll probably change it up.

I've got a Warn VR8000, but it appears they're no longer made.

Warn offers rebates on their winches all the time. Keep an eye out for them.

I won the 2-speed version of that winch 15-17 years ago in a raffle at a 4x4 event. Heaviest box I've ever had to lift & carry back to my Jeep.

HAHA. Last year at Trailfest I won a Quadratec 9500 Winch with synthetic rope which I was psyched about since I needed a winch so lugging that back to my campsite felt triumphant. Then this year at my club event I won a TuffStuff 9500 winch and I was like really? Another winch? I don't want to lug this damn thing! :)

I keep hoping I win another winch just so I can sell it lol. That's what I did when I won that Milemarker 2-speed hydraulic winch, I sold it rather than replace my Warn HS-9500i winch with it. While hydraulic winches are great for industrial uses like tow trucks, I'm no fan of them for offroad use due to their slow speed. :)

Gotta hand it to smittybilt on the reliability of their newer winches though. A friend of mine has a smittybilt x20 on the shop jeep. The boss told him he can only replace it with a warn when it fails. He's been TRYING to kill it for about 5 years now with no success.

This is good to know...Considering I just installed the same winch on my Jeep.

One issue I know exists with Smittybilt and their winches is you can't count on them to stock spare parts for them. One Smittybilt winch owner reported on JF that he had a solenoid go bad when the winch was still under warranty. When Smittybilt couldn't provide a replacement solenoid, they sent him a replacement winch instead. Sounds great, right? But they only did that because it was still under warranty. What happens years down the road after the warranty has expired when you need a replacement part and Smittybilt doesn't have it? They're not going to continue sending replacement winches out when a part like a Solenoid fails after the warranty has expired. Not to mention Warn uses a common type of solenoid that is easily sourced from sources like .https://www.dbelectrical.com/solenoids/winch-golf-cart/. Not so with Smittybilt's different solenoid design.

Warn has a policy to carry plenty of spare parts for all their products, even their earliest winches. Heck I broke a Warn hub by smashing it into a rock on the trail and Warn still had spare hub parts for me (no charge) when I called them, despite the fact they had sold their entire hub line to Randy's Ring & Pinion gears ago. They no longer sell hub kits but they still have spares for those they did sell. And spares for all of their entire winch line they've ever manufactured... a long-term policy of theirs.

And their de facto warranty is a lifetime warranty for parts. I didn't even have a receipt for my broken Warn hub yet they sent it out to me 2nd Day UPS. Their post-sales support is just one reason I'll never run any winch but a Warn.

Nice! If only every business showed as much concern for their customers...

Winch-related (as in, what it mounts to), I had an awesome experience with Bestop that was the exact opposite of this situation.

My Bestop stubby front bumper was a month or two out of warranty when it began to crack and flake. Not long after, the rust set in and it became a caked-up mess. Needless to say, I was less than happy. I popped off a few photos and sent it to Bestop. Why should a front bumper, which I expected to have for years, start failing like this after having it for just over one year?

A rep from Bestop replied a few days later asking for my address. A very short time later, I had a brand new stubby front bumper waiting for me on my doorstep. It was amazing!

There's some great companies out there that will jump through hoops to make sure their customers are happy. Their products may be a little more expensive, but if I've learned anything about Jeeps: you get what you pay for.

Yep warn has some of the best customer service going. I believe the odd solinoid on the smitty is actually called a contactor and warn is also using them in their higher end winches. Warn may sell you one later on but it's mega bucks as it comes with the box and all the wires. I bought one from runva Canada for 79 Canadian shipped to my door. It's a much better system than solinoids. If you want to rebuild a smitty you are probably on your own to source parts, but it can be done.

last Saturday I watched a brand newish (maybe 6 months out of the box) Quadratec synthetic take a dump when needed, worked for a second then just started clicking (not sure what that indicates) but we managed to get it to work just enough to drag my buddy up a hill before it died completely. The thing that sucked is that it was a very narrow & difficult rocky climb and there was no way I could drive back down facing him to pull him up as I would've been unable to then back back up the climb so we HAD to get that thing working

Fortunately he's still in the warranty zone but that was little consolation that day when it looked (for a while) like it wasn't gonna get it done...

Just bought a SuperWinch Tiger Shark 9500 SR, which is sitting in the garage until my new bumper comes in.
I've run the SuperWinch Tiger Shark 9500 SR for a year now without issue, used several times on the trail, often without any usage for two-three months.

I've also used it to pull 34 out of 36 wooden posts out of the ground. That made quick work out of a lot of work. It was put under a lot of stress that day and did awesome. I also straightened a steel post in a fenceline that had been run over by a drunk driver. I got in the right position and pulled and it came perfectly in line.

We'll see in the long run how it holds up. Always good deals coming from SuperWinch. Love the synthetic line, even in the rocks, though some would frown....I smile....

Can someone tell me how are these control boxes mounted on the winch?

My winch came with the solenoids and I just picked up a ABS project box to get the solenoids in there however I am not sure how to fasten/support the box to the winch itself.
