What other projects are you working on?

First time that's been recommended to me. Also not an Atmos track but in reading the reviews, my copy will arrive on Saturday.

"Is there such a thing as "too intense?" Serenity's DTS:X soundtrack makes a case. It's generally in good working order, with some amazing sonic cues along the way, but its most aggressive action scenes tend to border on overdone. Right off the bat, as the ship descends for the first time, the sonic intensity at reference level is off-the-charts. Full stage saturation and intense, room-rattling bass plop the listener not into the action, but seemingly right inside the ship's thrusters. At the same time, music pushes through with its own might, spilling through every speaker with raw, unadulterated power but enough clarity to please. A space battle in chapter 15 is another example of the track's unflinching eagerness to make itself the loudest home viewing experience one will encounter. Even with all the mayhem, spacial awareness and detail are always key, even when the track is throwing the proverbial sonic kitchen sink at the listener. Small ticks and rattles inside the ship are always evident, and the top end engages in both the action excess and in support of the finer environmental cues that often give the show an added layer of charm. Dialogue is just fine and plays as the most balanced element in the film. This is a very fun and hugely aggressive track; just keep that finger on the volume button."

Serenity is the movie that kinds of wraps up the Firefly TV series.

The movie is great by itself, but the series is also great and fills in a lot of the detail and characters.

The scene I referenced is about 8 minutes in, after the Operative has started his hunt for River Tam.

Close cut of the ship with orchestral music playing, then fans out and the ship engines fire when it hits atmosphere.

My media room is in my basement. This scene will shake pictures off the walls upstairs if I don't tone it down a bit.

I’ve watched the series and I think I watched serenity too. But, it was a long time ago.

Almost missed an opportunity here

Looks great. That's awesome you're doing all this yourself, how come you don't do the trim?

Looks like I'm getting an opportunity to learn something new, haha.

Trim bid came in a bit higher than I had budgeted so I'm gonna let him do the base and the tedious stuff like door and window casing and closet shelving and I'm gonna do the extras. Wife wants wainscoting in the big room and a board and batten look in the bedroom and bathroom, which right or wrong seems less intimidating to me than doing craftsman style casing or shelving out a closet. And it's gonna save me $2500 minus a new finish nailer.

At least it'll all be painted so I can cover my mistakes. 🤣

One of the best reasons to do work yourself is to accumulate new tools!

A little caulk and paint makes you the carpenter you ain't!

Trying to get this 60 year old little turd to burn properly after making it almost go Boom 20 years ago.
1000002009.jpg

I think the lead cap seal is kaput, which doubles as a safety. It didn't do its job when things got exciting but it's trying to make up for it now.

What is it

A small coil burner camp stove. It's preheated with a match to vaporize the fuel and it lights if you're lucky. The time I made it go boom, I tried to use fire paste, aka, poor man's napalm, to preheat it. Really really bad idea. Too hot too fast. I had a flaming stream of kerosene shooting out of it. That became a flaming pool of kerosene that engulfed the little booger. Instead of the lead seal melting and venting the tank with another momentary flaming jet of fuel, the solder melted at the filler bung. The bung attempted Low Earth Orbit, followed by a ball of flaming kerosene. It was an exciting 90 seconds. I threw a Carhartt jacket on it to douse the flames, then picked up the pieces and forgot about it until I picked up that little alcohol fueled blow torch. That thing is perfect for sweat soldering.
The lead sheet showed up today, so I'll make a new seal later today and try again.

I didn't get around to making the new seal til today. I had a modicum of success, tho.

This pic is with the windscreen on the burner.

Without the windscreen, the flame is easily blown out. Instructions for shutting it down are to blow out the flame then open the cap to vent the pressure. I ran the stove for 30 minutes with no issues other than the yellow flame. That tells me the stove is running rich. I'm guessing that's because I'm running charcoal lighter in it instead of kerosene. Some crud got pushed into the orifice a couple of times and gave me a nice blue flame until the crud got pushed out. Guess I better slice a vein and get a gallon of kerosene.

Great project ! Too bad kerosene's cost is brain dead high and make most of it's uses irrelevant . :(

Thanks.
In the 70s, I had a 1937 John Deere A tractor that was started on gas then switched over to kerosene when the 308 ci 2 cylinder reached operating temp. It cost $0.32 to fill the 1 gallon gas tank and $2.00 to fill the 20 gallon kerosene tank. Boy, did that thing bark under load when on kerosene.

Hence , the Poppin Johnny nick name ! Today the gas would cost you $ 2.28 a gallon , and the kerosene to fill the 20 gallon tank would be $ 240.00 .
Times change , a tractor with a blown Big Block Chevy would be cheaper to operate !

What about Diesel? #1 if you can get it.

I'm in an agricultural state, so it's available, just not here. The only place I've ever come across it when filling up the diesel F150 is a gas station in Eustis, ME. I know enough not to put #1 in the pickup. And, yeah, it's smokey. The PO of my house left me a half gallon of the stuff in the garage and I stupidly used it as charcoal lighter. Pew.
