What other projects are you working on?

Agree! The water rights are so stupid. Can't even use my water to grow plants. It reallyy grinds my gears that I technically can't use my well to wash my cars... But then there is a commercial car wash nearby 🙄

Yup , the residential state well permit says the water use is for , "internal domestic use only" . Yet when we built our home it was required to have a outside hose bib . Government always upright and consistent

I got the smallest of my water tanks (305 gallons) set and plumbed in this weekend. I spent Saturday working on the pea gravel pad for it, and then I set it and plumbed it today:

I still have to plumb in an overflow, and I'm going to plumb in a transfer pump to move this water through the system to another transfer pump that can move it to the medium-sized tank (1,550 gallons) that will be on a massive steel platform to serve the garden. It'll be massive for two reasons. First, 1,550 gallons weighs almost 13,000 lb, and second, I have a bunch of steel left over from a job that I can use so I don't have to buy any.

Seems we are both working in PVC this week, Scott. Nice work.

Got to brag on my son. He’s giving his off-road truck a makeover. One ton square body. Frame shortened. Getting some inspiration from OffRoad Designs.
Anyway here’s the gas tank skid he fabricated for a Blazer fuel tank that fits between the rear frame rails.

Latest project was getting this newest antique score to run.

It's a Jim Dandy alcohol fuel blow torch. Late forties, early fifties. A radio hobbyist or jewelers blow torch. Normally, I wouldn't spend more than ten bucks on an old blow torch but this one is way different than any other one I own. Plated, for one. No real nozzle to speak of. Two fuel reservoirs. I've found some info online about Jim Dandy torches online but almost nothing on this model.

First thing was figuring out how it works. That took a bit of head scratching. The knurled cap is the tank for the burner. The cap with the handle is the tank for the orifice. I couldn't even find the orifice at first as it was really plugged.

This is the first lighting before I figured out there was separate tank for the orifice.

I had unscrewed the hex at the pipe and dumped alcohol down there. It ran for maybe 5 minutes.

This is after getting my head out of my ass and filling the second tank.
IkqFJsTl.jpg

It ran for well over an hour on a single filling. It could have easily run longer but I got bored and went in the house. Usually, an old blow torch, Coleman type lantern, or stove that hasn't been used in years will begin to burn better the longer they are run. The gunk in the generators gets cleaned out. This one was no exception. As far as lighting it after filling, pop the cap off the wick and put a match to it. That's it. Within two minutes, the long flame begins to shoot out.

Yesterday, for shits and giggles, I used it to sweat solder a scrap piece of sheet metal to a piece of steel tube. One, to see if it would, and two, to see if I still could. It was a yes to both. Unlike most blow torches, this torch is quiet. It doesn't generate too much heat, and the handle is more comfortable than my Lenk brand alcohol blow torch. It may have become my favorite.

The Lenk. There's a ritual to get this one lit.
fXlo9HQl.jpg

This was the first lighting of it. The green in the flame is impurities being burned away. Also the cause of the crooked flame. This does have the satisfying roar of a gas blow torch.

The companion gas dryer for my Speed Queen washer arrived last week, so I took the Jeep and trailer up to JAX to pick it up. As there was no gas connection for it, I had to tee off from the water heater. Homeless Despot doesn't carry black pipe AT ALL. That's fine, I went to our local hardware/industrial/commercial place that's been in the same location since 1888. They had it of course.

Gas isn't particularly common here in Florida, but we're lucky in that we have it.

Had it framed just before Thanksgiving, plumbed the bathroom right after and then I did the electrical and HVAC myself in a couple of weekends.

Planning to get LVP down in the bathroom today and tomorrow so the trim carpenter can do his work Thursday-Friday, paint and carpet next week and my wife wants to have guests staying in it 1/16. Would have been nice not to catch a cold last night but it is what it is.

Big room will get a 120" 4k projector and Dolby Atmos 7.2.4 audio, and double as the music room with the record player, my kids drumsets, keyboards, guitar, etc. and for now an air hockey table. maybe a pool table eventually but it'll be a little bit of a squeeze with the furniture we're looking at. I asked my 7 year old what he thinks should be the first film we watch in there and he said Jurassic Park, which is fine by me.

Looks great. That's awesome you're doing all this yourself, how come you don't do the trim?

I probably would if my wife wasn't in so much of a rush to have it done for her friends to come visit, but I don't have much trim experience so it would take me 4x as long while I learn by trial and error all the tricks of the trade that make things go fast. Same with the framing....I could have, but I paid a guy and his crew $1200 to get done in one day what would have taken me a week to do myself. I'm at that point in my life that I have more money than time so I think of it as buying time.

The trim guy starts another job on Monday so if I can't get the materials lined up by Thursday or he runs out of time, I'll probably end up finishing up. I'll have him shelve out the closet and get the doors all hung and cased and if there's still base and other molding left I'll finish up.

I've done enough electrical and HVAC to already be efficient at it so I never even considered hiring that out.

The bathroom floor and the shower surround would be a whole 'nother sub to bring in which made no sense for a job that only takes a couple hours even for a noob like me.

Atmos is the way. Consider shaker seats if they are an option for what you want they add an entire new dimension to movie watching.

Jurassic Park doesn't have an Atmos track. With kids in mind I recommend Ready Player One as the second movie to show off the system.

My favorite "flex" scene is near the beginning of the movie Serenity when the Firefly ship is entering atmosphere.

First time that's been recommended to me. Also not an Atmos track but in reading the reviews, my copy will arrive on Saturday.

"Is there such a thing as "too intense?" Serenity's DTS:X soundtrack makes a case. It's generally in good working order, with some amazing sonic cues along the way, but its most aggressive action scenes tend to border on overdone. Right off the bat, as the ship descends for the first time, the sonic intensity at reference level is off-the-charts. Full stage saturation and intense, room-rattling bass plop the listener not into the action, but seemingly right inside the ship's thrusters. At the same time, music pushes through with its own might, spilling through every speaker with raw, unadulterated power but enough clarity to please. A space battle in chapter 15 is another example of the track's unflinching eagerness to make itself the loudest home viewing experience one will encounter. Even with all the mayhem, spacial awareness and detail are always key, even when the track is throwing the proverbial sonic kitchen sink at the listener. Small ticks and rattles inside the ship are always evident, and the top end engages in both the action excess and in support of the finer environmental cues that often give the show an added layer of charm. Dialogue is just fine and plays as the most balanced element in the film. This is a very fun and hugely aggressive track; just keep that finger on the volume button."

Definitely an option and I ran wires for them and have them on my amazon list. Will see how the budget shakes out to see whether they are included for day 1 or as a future upgrade. The second subwoofer and the back surround speakers are kindof in the same status...I wired for 7.2.4 plus seat shakers but I may start with 5.1.4.

It's ridiculously easy to spend absurd money on this stuff.

good point...I've been so behind on home theater tech that I slip into assuming anything I have in 4K will also have Atmos but that's not really true. Ready Player One would be a good choice and they haven't seen it yet. I was also thinking of Top Gun Maverick solely due to jet flybys but the non-combat scenes don't keep their attention as much.

Interesting. I last watched that on TV speakers so I completely missed it.

I can't figure out a way to work the other two speakers into my theater room so I am at 5.2.4 and I've been very happy with it. You look to have more space to work with. It can be expensive but it can be done over time and not hurt as bad. Nothing like having the family all together enjoying a movie in the comfort of your own home. Don't forget the snacks.

We watched the final scenes of Maverick Sunday as I recalibrated my speakers since I added Dirac Bass Control. The shake of being in the cockpit is pretty incredible, I could feel it from just the subs even before I turned the seats back on. Had the seats off for the sound calibration, didn't need them affecting it.
