Warn M8274 (I think)

About 13 years ago I purchased a used Warn winch from someone who said it worked but I never got around to testing or installing it. It just sat in my garage. Fast forward and I am considering selling the unit but I have no clue as to the value. The person who sold it to me had painted over the data plate, but after cleaning with some toothpaste I was able to get part number 8403 and SN 110264 as well as the date code KB8 which makes me think November 2 of 1988, maybe. It was obviously used a great deal by its previous owner, but my understanding is these things are built to last.

Is there any danger in me attaching the battery leads to my truck and seeing if it works? I feel like "does it work" is an important part of determining value.

Any help/advice you have is greatly welcome. Thank you.

Yes you can connect the leads to a spare battery or the battery in your truck.
Price seems to be dependent on location. Here in the PNW that would sell for $300-500 not working and around $700 if it does.
But I've seen them go for less back each with some guys getting non-working ones for $75.

Also you're missing the end plate or it's not in your pictures? That is a $150-185 part to replace if you don't have it.

That won't tear up the gears if there is low oil or something?

I would ask $500.00 to $600.00 for it if it works.

That whole metal plate is your end plate.. It wasn't in your other pictures that I saw.

You can run it for a short time with no oil in the bottom housing. The seals go bad and people run them with next to no oil in them.
