Just snagged this winch from an estate sale up the road.

The date code appears to be from 1978.

It looks to be in rather excellent condition given its age and that it was actually used on a farm.

The old man gave me the manuals and even still had an original decal sticker inside of one of them.

I’ll probably go through the winch and freshen it up before putting it on my Jeep.

Oh yeah - I paid $100 for the winch, controller, original vinyl cover, and snatch block. Not too bad of a deal. 😎 The solenoids are junk but that’s not a big deal.

Here’s my questions for those who are familiar with these winches.

Are they worth modifying or should I just put in a seal kit and run it?

Looks like not used much, great condition. Would put new seals, new oil and take the motor off and clean it up inside.
If the solenoids are good, keep them and run. Get a synthetic line from blackjack and new fairlead. (125 ft of cable is heavy.)

I have a spare 9.5xp motor I wanted to use so I purchased the 98380 gear from Warn.

The cut out on the gear for the shift fork is twice as big. Am I missing something? Looks like it’s gonna have a lot more play.

I’d appreciate any help from anyone who’s upgraded to the 9.5xp motor.

Yeah that’s a pretty recent thing. Cost cutting measure is my guess. Will bet that there will be some slop there. My only question is it enough to alter the mesh between it and the driven gear in the box.

Everything seemed to mesh up good. I got the brake rebuilt today. The disassembly process fought like a bear.

I got everything mocked up. My only tube of rtv was too old to use so I’ll need to pick some up before sealing up the case.

Looks pretty good I think.

Modifying the 8274 IMO is like modifying our Jeeps....

@Blackjack has a great thread on modifying them too. If you haven't read it yet.

I also upgraded my brake shaft when I'd rebuilt mine.

Great score and enjoy it. What are your plans for mounting it?

I’m on the fence about a mount. Part of me wants to fabricate a mount from the old school one it came with. The other part wants to just buy something that’s plug and play.

Looking at Warns website they are still showing the 8274 mounting plate as out of stock.... While I like their mount a lot I'd guess you don't have much options at this point and will need to fab up something on your own unless you can find a used Warn 38671 or NOS.

IMO easiest at this point if you want to use a new mounting plate & then bolt it to a bumper. Part of this depends on if you have the stock swaybar or not as that can cause clearance issues or makes you need to move the mount forward.

I used a Motobilt bumper & then modified it to use their 8274 mount since they don't make an actual 8274 bumper for a TJ/LJ like they do for the newer JK/JL Jeeps.

When i was looking i found the warn plate on ebay. Kept it saved for a long time, but couldn't pull the trigger on buying it.

When warn doesn't have them in stock, and the Ebay guy had one it made me leary.

Their not cheap, but a guy with welding skills should be able to fab one pretty easy.

The one thing that I seem to remember about the Warn 8274 mount was that it was made to clear the stock swaybar.
I had their mount on my YJ. It was beefy for sure. But yes I agree if you started with a mount from one of the vendors making the cross piece shouldn't be too hard. Just have to decide where you want it to sit.
