BLUF - Switched from Dana 35 to a Teraflex CRD60 Dana 60 and as best I can tell the Teraflex axle raises the shock mounts so the shocks that were recommended for my Rock Jock 4 inch lift now only have 2.5 inches of uptravel, trying to determine a solution. Is anybody running the CRD 60 and Currie springs and if so what shock are you running?

As I'm sure a few folks have experienced, I am currently in neck deep in the adventure that comes with venturing from light mods to having to deal with making parts from many sources work together.

For background, it is a 97 Sport with the 4.0 and 5 speed. In 2023 I pulled the trigger on the parts cannon from Rock Jock doing basically the entirety of their suspension and steering offerings with the exception of the rear anti-rock, including the Rancho RS9000XL shocks they sell and recommend and have been enjoying it on 33s since then.

Back in May it lunched the spider gears in the Dana 35 so figuring it was time for gear and lockers anyways, I decided not fix the 35 and shop for a whole new rear axle. I ended up with a Teraflex CRD60 semi-float and recently finished the install that admittedly got a little out of hand, doing a belly up (and requisite body lift/motor mount lift), clutch, rear main, NP241, 4.88s and ARBs. It will be on 33s for another few weeks until the 35s arrive.

I noticed driving home from the alignment shop it felt like it was hitting the bump stops over larger obstacles at speed, but a bit more violent than I've experienced when i've hit them before. Upon investigation there is only 2.5 inches of up travel and it seems it is bottoming out the shocks, my conundrum is how to correct. I was considering dropping down to the next shorter shock ( the shock recommended for 2.5 inches of lift) but it does lose nearly 1.5 inches of stroke - 7.25 vs 8.875, I admittedly don't know if that's actually a problem. The other option is move away from the Ranchos, to something with a shorter body but commiserate stroke. However, opinions are obviously like assholes on shocks so I don't dare ask for that recommendation.

Post up pictures of your axle side shock mounts. I've got a CRD60 rear in my TJ also and am only 61" WMS and outboarded my shocks in 2006.

Why $3K to outboard your shocks? Rear towers & new shocks since it'd be a waste to not install 12" travel shocks while doing the outboard.

Or as Lou said new lower shocks mounts to put your shocks in the right position.

I’m estimating roughly a $1k for tower install and associated fab work and roughly $2k for a set of tuned Fox shocks.

Springs look to be roughly in the same spot, but yeah that lower shock mount is raised compared to stock. So, new lower shock mounts that are lower or just save for the outboard and fix it then.

As said by JMT the shock brackets aren't in the same positions. The CRD shock mount is a lot higher than the stock if you compare it in reference to where the control arm brackets are.

I'd put shock extender brackets on or even better would be new shock brackets that centered your current shock travel to be as close to centered as possible.

Then I'd save up for outboarding. But when you do that spend the time & money to have 12" travel shocks in the rear & 11" or 12" travel shocks in the front.
If you're going with Fox tuned shocks then also at a minimum get LSC & if you can swing it DSC on the reservoirs too.

I was today years old when I found out LSC and DSC were a thing. The rabbit hole is getting deep :D

Thanks for the assist gents, I’ll start researching options to bridge the gap until I can outboard.

Agreed with the others, your new shock mounts aren't "right" for your current setup. Either way you're going to need to cut them off and get that balance right or add a spacer for the shock mount (lots of us have done this for a period of time).

I'm POOR so I only could afford LSC's on my shocks and I don't have enough seat time playing with them yet to tell you what I think. And my rig isn't a normal TJ either...

Since you've got a RS9000's already I'd make them work for now...

Some follow up - Spoke to Teraflex today and the axle mount is in fact shifted up by ~1.25 inches. Doing some Google foo it turns out the next size shorter RS9000 at 50/50 is 17.375 inches. I was thrilled to learn this as the current shock length at ride height is 17.5 inches, so I think I have a path forward while I save my pennies for outboard and further poor financial decisions.
