Hi, I have a problem with my new to me 2006 4.0, X, 6 speed.

The harmonic balancer on the output shaft of the transfer case came loose at some point, tore the boot open, and has been spinning on the shaft.

My impression is that this is supposed to be a press fit onto the output shaft that requires a tool to set properly.

When I place the balancer on the shaft, I can easily slip it all the way forward by hand and at that point, it will spin on the shaft. I assume that this is a problem caused by the balancer spinning on the shaft for who knows how long and wearing in.

What are my options at this point? Am I missing something? I've read through all the threads relating to the balancer, and would prefer to keep it if possible.

TIA for any guidance.

I'm assuming the shaft in the 231J is shot.

So at the very least you need to replace that...and honestly the easiest source is install a SYE and a double carden driveshaft.

I'd call Tom Woods or Adam's Driveshaft and discuss your options.

You may just need to replace the harmonic balancer.

When intact, it has an inner part and an outer part separated and held together by a thin piece of rubber.

Sounds like the rubber is gone?

The balancer is intact. I suspect that the I.D. where it slips on the shaft is out of spec.

I think you're right. What about for now...Just putting it back together without the balancer? Bad idea?

Balancer isn't needed. If it bolts up, it's true and doesn't wobble and have excessive run out then send it. If you have driveline vibrations at least you probably know where they came from.

FYI, the tool for the damper is 8422, which basically presses the damper to a preset location where the tool bottoms out.

The damper appears to only be installed on MTs, it's replaced by a slinger on the ATs. Looks like you'd need the AT slinger to attach the boot to with the damper gone.

Slinger install tool is 8408.
