Ok, I've tried my best to find this answer and cannot find a clear answer.

Not talking about leg room or cargo space, is there any difference in the relation between the rear seat of a TJ and the fender wells versus an LJ rear seat and fender wells?

For instance, I'm trying to figure out if I can fit a 40" PRP high back bench. I know @LJGreg has the seat on his LJ but want to make sure that it will fit a TJ as well. He seems to be the only person on the internet (that I can find) that has installed this seat and shared it.

I'm struggling with it because, in some pictures, it looks like the LJ seat sits slightly more forward on the wheel well, which would make sense to me. Otherwise, I don't see how you gain 10" of wheelbase, but only 2" of leg room. But then others it doesn't, and others still I just can't tell.

I hope what I'm asking makes sense.

I don't know the answer to your question but if you need any LJ measurements or details on how I installed my bench let me know.

Thanks! I went and looked at all of your pictures, and yours look great. I very well may need to take you up on that. Hoping someone here has a thorough knowledge of both (maybe both sitting in their driveway) and can confirm one way or another.

Perhaps these OEM Jeep brochure photos will help.

I stared at these pictures so long I thought I would go crosseyed. You just can't see the wheel wells clear enough to really tell.

I'm also now starting to think that the headrests would possibly rub the Trektop. I may be out of luck on the highback seat with headrests. Really wanted to add headrests when we went to new seats.

I just added one more pic. From what I recall, the LJ seemed to have more rear legroom in the two times I have been in the rear of one. But I am not 100% sure.

The one person who can exactly tell you would be @mrblaine.

That one does help a bit. Now to scrutinize it closely compared to a TJ. To my knowledge it's only 2" legroom and then 12" (maybe 13) behind the seat.

That's also part of the plan, but they say the 40" doesn't fit a TJ, only a 39".

Obviously, nobody wants to spend that kind of money on a seat for it to not work! And it'll be custom, so no returns.

The 2005 Wrangler brochure says:
TJ leg room front/rear: 40.9 / 35.3
LJ leg room front/rear: 40.9 / 37.0

But the LJ has a 10" longer wheelbase, so the rear seat moves back a little, but the rear wheelwells move back more.

You are looking for width between the wheel wells to see if a 40 inch seat will fit, correct?

Or do you need a measurement from the front of the rear seat pan to the mounting holes? The early TJs use different mounting brackets, so I am not sure if that is part of the issue. Later TJs/LJs don't have the catch on the wheel well, just on the floor.

First picture on this thread has all of the mounting brackets showing.

I have read that the seats are interchangeable as long as you have the correct brackets.
