Time to change your cabin air filter

I drive mine as often as I can, not always in fair weather... Daily? not really, I have another Jeep that wants to share my attention. The ONLY time the TJ is fully buttoned up, is when the outside temps are below around 40° F. I have NEVER had dust in the HVAC system, other than a very fine layer... I get more on the dash in a week than what was in there after nearly 20 years of ownership.

That's great for you and your use, seriously. Personally, I don't understand why you would own both, particularly the newer one, but I'm not telling you to sell one or that having both is a foolish. I assume you have your reasons for owning both and you're free to do so.

If I wanted a vehicle to never have the top and doors come off, there are a lot of cheaper/more comfortable SUVs out on the market to go to the mall...

Well, not sure what to say other than I wanted a TJ Unlimited, so I bought one. It suits my needs quite well and I do drive it sans doors on occasion. And I don't go to malls, ever...hate the feckin' places. But somehow just because I'm not bouncing mine off trees and rocks or running around with the top down, doors off and music blaring on the weekends, I shouldn't have one or should consider getting some piece-of-shit SUV? I'll keep the Jeep, thanks.

On a historic note, the Jeep wasn't developed as a play toy, but it was developed a general purpose utility vehicle.

In summation, given the fact that dude on ebay seems to be moving his product and numerous members here have attempted some kind of cabin air filtration over the years, apparently there is a point and it matters to some people.

3D printed stuff is not as strong as actual molded parts. These parts wont see any stress except where the screws are used so don't over tighten when installing.

That depends on many factors beyond just how the part is created.

I've had mine installed for over year now, still going strong and holding up well. But to your point, not under a lot of stress.

What is the point of this on a TJ? Seriously. I'm curious. My Scion has one and it helps the blower motor to keep running. I found out the hard way when mice built a nest in it. Blower motor quit running.

If you've ever wheeled west of the Mississipp, particularly if you're not in front, you'd know you're getting more dust than air most of the time. If this helps with that in any noticeable amount, it'll be worth it.

There is absolutely no demand for it. Anal retentive people need it. Like gluten free food that has gluten, and NOBODY is allergic to it. If the label says so it must be true. 🤫

My son is severely allergic to wheat & gluten amongst other things. Like exorcist style projectile vomiting, Epi-Pen stabbing, ER visiting allergic. Just went last week. I do laugh at soy latte sipping fruit cakes that are "gluten free" because life style choice though. Other end of crazy spectrum from anti-vaxers.

And my cabin filter is specifically because of following people on a trail and literally eating their dust. And I am no top/doors May-Oct.

I raced motocross for years and used to purposely take off last to practice my passing skills. I know about inhaling dust and mud.

The eBay item from the original post now has an option to include a splash guard. I bought the filter adapter months ago and saw the new splash guard and PMd the seller, he agreed to sell me just the splash guard as a separate item and had it out the next day.

Pretty sure I put the original cover back over the Ebay filter/adapter.
Had to use longer screws.
And maybe trim the height some.

I looked into that but I would have had to really butcher it to get the height down where the cowl would fit back on. There wouldn't have been any flange left to attach it with.

I don’t know why you guys are obsessing about dust in the cabin. This year I ran Pritchett Canyon without a filter into my engine!

No problem at all.

🙂

But back on point, I don’t run a cabin air filter. And where I am it is absolutely fine. But every time I run Moab, I definitely wish I had one in there, and would actually like to do so at some point.

It is all about where you run.

Pritchett Canyon isn't a particularly dusty trail.

If you want dust, try Saline Valley in Death Valley National Park.

So...how do you get the cowl on and off without scratching up the paint under the wiper arm mounts and on the back of the hood? Is that not a problem for other people?

Put some tape on the wiper mounts, and use two people to lift it, and be really careful.

As it turned out, San Juans are getting a late monsoon session this year, so Imogene Pass is closed to repair mudslide damage and I couldn't find dust if I wanted to. 🤣

I’ve come across this a few times now when looking at cabin filter mods and wanted to ask if you make this to sell?

So far I've only released print files of the design. Selling printed versions is under consideration and I'm currently working on a V2 design.

Some primitive flow testing I did on mine.

If you know someone with a 3D printer capable of printing in ABS, you can download the STL files for free from my domain. Zip password is "WTF". I only have one printer, and while it's pretty quick, I couldn't produce them in any serious quantities for sale.

For anyone with an older TJ, I'd be interested in knowing the measurements of the hole in the sub-cowl, relative to the screw holes (assuming they are at the same location as later models, and it would appear from the modification above that they are). I could develop an additional air plenum part design to accommodate earlier TJ models and include it in an updated zip for download.

Hello. Your design looks great!. There is any chance you can upload it again?. The link is no longer working.

Thanks!!
