The official idiot driver thread

As bad as Commiefornia drivers are, I didn't see it much there. But I've seen people of ALL ages doing it here. I'm always ready to brake, steer, and honk. I'll be turning left after a light change, and the guy behind me will often start turning before I do! Or if I'm in the right side of a 2 lane left, the guy on the left side cuts the corner so bad that it looks like he's going to T-bone me at the other end of the turn! Those arcs that are drawn in the intersection are there for a reason - they are the fastest way to make the turn because you don't have to brake to make a 45 at the end...
That same thing happens here routinely. Left turner in the outside lane cuts the apex and crosses the center line into the left lane. It’s so bad at some intersections the center white line is worn away.

That's when my horn gets some exercise if I'm in the inside lane - yea, I have to watch out for those fools too.

I don’t worry when I’m in the TJ, let them come into my lane and meet a 32 x 11.50 tire. That has happened twice - one woman got black stripes down the side of her Suburban from her front tire to the rear tire, across both doors and fenders. And she refused to stop. Her problem, not mine.

I just operate under the assumption that everyone is going to make a mistake, it keeps me from getting too upset. Sometimes I have to remind myself that most people don't have any respect for the driving experience like we do. As everyone mentioned in this thread, basic highway etiquette is lost on people, maintain a stable speed, keeping right etc.

Okay here's my rant, if you don't know how to drive in the snow stay home or move South. I'm in one of the snowiest metropolitan areas in the United States historically speaking, it isn't a mountain pass somewhere in the Rockies and people have to actually drive to work. People are hopping onto the interstate and doing 35 miles per hour (no DOT plow in front of them even) in a lane that doesn't even have snow in a commuter car, and I'm doing 55+ in the lane that is actually covered in snow, in a commercial dump truck that's RWD. The area I live in is not some glamorous or nice destination, and it's not even that affordable at that. Don't like it, move south. Even just going to PA would probably be a benefit to some of these people who need a DOT plow in front of them always to feel safe. The worst part is they are locals who have lived here forever. But this is coming from someone who actually likes driving in the snow, so I have a distorted expectation of what speed people should be doing.

Living in the mountains of North Georgia we get LOTS of Floridians here. I have noticed 1 thing about FLA. cars, they must come with some sort of interlock that doesn't allow the steering wheel to be turned unless the brake pedal is depressed. Even if they come to a curve in the road that is going up a steep hill they have to hit the brakes to unlock the steering wheel and allow them to turn it from straight ahead.

Yea, those drive me nuts. And the ones driving over a causeway: 45 Zone, so they go 40 (at best) going up, and 50-55 going down!

I don't blame you. I don't do snow. I don't know how to drive in it, don't want to know, and I'm sure 95% of the other fools out there don't either. If it ever were to snow here and stick, I'd fucking stay home until it went away.

Shit - Forididiots don't even know how to drive in the RAIN. I figured when I moved here from Commiefornia, I'd finally be around people that knew how to drive in the wet. They don't. I've learned to stay off of the freeway when its raining, and take surface streets instead. The instant a drop of water hits the windshield, everyone's doing 20 under, and pretty soon there will be "something" to cause a Charlie Foxtrot of EPIC proportions. Total opposite of my experiences in NOLA, KY, Tenn, etc. They would be 20 under in Commeifornia too - but at least they didn't wipe out and clog the freeways.

And they don't turn on their headlights but do turn on the emergency flashers !

Even in NY you get a lot of people dropping below the speed limit when visibility is still good.

The left lane of a multiple lane highway is for passing, not cruising along, and certainly not for leading a parade. I really try not to pass on the right but sometimes it’s the only way to get around the person that is more comfortable in that lane even when driving slower than other traffic.

Many people are not just ignorant of the laws of the road they are oblivious to others around them.

That’s not the law here. Roads with 2 or more lanes in each direction do not have a “passing lane” and there is no restriction on overtaking a vehicle in a right lane.

The left lane thing here applies to limited access highways only, not multiple lane roads and highways. The difference being a limited access highway has no intersections. Of course a good driver would stay right except to pass on rural multilane highways IMHO.

Left lane drivers must have a totally different mentality. I recall years ago on a nearly deserted stretch of divided 4 lane highway (2 lanes each direction) there was a car/woman driving in the left lane up ahead of me, she moved over to the right lane to let a faster vehicle go by, then then she moved back over into the left lane. Didn’t make any sense to me.

Have you ever let someone in front of you from a side street at a light only to have them stay stopped in front of you with their turn signal on when the light turns green and make you wait out the whole green light because they want the next lane?

I used to drive from the Houston area to Louisiana on I-10 just about every Friday evening. In Texas it was any lane goes, then in Louisiana just about everyone drove in the right lane except to pass.

Around here it's pretty much getting to be that way, partly because the roads are so crowded now. Bumper to bumper on I-17 between Flag and PHX and on I-10 between PHX and Tucson.
