Hi All…first timer here…

I’ve got an opportunity to buy a low mileage ‘06 TJ Rubicon with only 25,000 miles for $19K. It’s a single owner and this one has been in New York its entire life. Everything looks pristine (from 20 ft away) and I’ve asked the dealer to send me some closeup pictures…they just came in. They aren’t super clear but there are signs of rust. The Carfax shows the undercarriage has been sprayed in the past so maybe it was treated with TLC??? I’m not a rust expert so I figured I’d post ‘em here and see what yall think. Should I run the other way? Ask for more specific pictures? Hire a local company to inspect it for me? Anything anyone has to say would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I would ask for more pictures from the underside need to see more of the frame and and springs and steering areas before I would buy it

If you live in San Antonio, why would you look for a Jeep in NY? I see rust on that one. There are better Jeeps where you live. 🇺🇸
Good question...I'm looking for an 06 Rubicon with the 6-speed. I had one 15 years ago and have always regretted letting it go. I traded for another Jeep but still, I miss it. I found this one with low miles & I started inquiring more about it. It's actually not in New York anymore...but still too far for me to drive & see it. It's partly nostalgia but also I love TJ's with the straight 6 (a true beast). If I could find one closer I would definitely go for it.

From what I can see that dealer sure put a nice new paint job on the underside of that thing !

That's what I thought too...but they sent me the carfax and believe it or not, the underbody spray was listed on the carfax and the listed date was before the dealer got it. I called the company that applied the coating and asked a few questions about it...they said the owner brings all their vehicles in for the spray and that it's big business up there...no recollection of trying to hide anything. I'm gonna call them back and ask if its the only time they had the spray on the jeep.

That Jeep no matter what the mileage is, isn't worth close to 20 grand.

Keep emotions out of buying a car!!!

You're in Texas, right? There's zero reason to drop $20,000 on a rust belt Jeep. In 3 years that little bubble around those spot welds under the tailgate hinge will be cancerous and falling apart. Ask me how I know.

Sheet metal repairs are expensive to do correctly. I wouldn't drop $20,000 on this, and I live in the heart of the rust belt... lake effect snow for 4 months straight.

That undercoating will do no good at all. Even if it actually works to keep water away from the outside of the frame, TJ frames rust from the inside. They can be 90% gone before you see trouble on the outside.
