2004 Rubicon with 4.0. Have owned it about two weeks. Started throwing this code after I put 700 miles on it. Replaced after market gas cap with Mopar locking OEM gas cap. Had Oreilys reset the code and threw it again after 100 miles. Have read on the internet that topping the tank off after the fuel nozzle clicks may be the cause due to the vent (not sure about that). Also read it could be the purge valve/solenoid. Replaced it today. What is odd, is the one I replace had the side marked "top" down. When I replaced it with the new valve I turned it where the side marked "top" was on top. Turning the valve 180 degrees also reverses the two vacuum lines feeding into it. Haven't driven the Jeep enough to know if it is going to throw the code again. Vacuum lines under the hood all look good. Thoughts or suggestions. Thanks! (The photos are of the new valve and the way I installed it)

Replaced the purge valve and filled up with fuel again, this time stopping after the nosel clicked the first time. I have put 200 miles on since doing this and no code so far (unless I just jinxed it!)

Didn't see this until now. So it would seen that the new purge valve did the trick?

I know this is an older thread, but I have had the P0441 code consistently since I got my 1997 4.0l Jeep last September.

I had gone through all of the vacuum lines, gas tank vent line, and the purge solenoid. Through the winter the error seemed to subside a bit, but once warmer weather hit (I'm Colorado based), the code would come back about every 70-80 miles after I reset it. The vacuum line from the charcoal canister to the purge solenoid would routinely fill with bits of charcoal, and my garage always strongly smelled of gas, especially near the gas tank vent. I would empty everything out from the line and the purge solenoid and put it all back together, then reset the code. 70-80 miles late, P0441 is back.

I researched this a ton and finally found a thread on another forum where someone authoritatively stated that the charcoal canister must be replaced once it starts leaking charcoal. Made sense to me. However, for the 97-02 Wranglers, the cylindrical canisters are long since discontinued. Someone else had suggested a GM model canister which was the same size, with the same vacuum line connections. I found it on Amazon for $60 and ordered it:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000C9I9GQ/?tag=wranglerorg-20

It took about 4 minutes to install and fit perfectly into the existing bracket with just one small bend of a metal tab on the outer ring of the bracket. I have put 600 miles on it since the install in all types of conditions (hot, cold, sun, dry, rain, mud, 4Hi, 4Low, 5000 - 12,000ft elevation, highway, trail, etc.) and no more P0441. No more gasoline smell. I feel like the Jeep runs a bit more smooth as well.

I highly recommend replacing the charcoal canister when you receive the P0441 code, as long as you have confirmed that the purge solenoid is working properly. Hope this helps someone out there....

Great information, thanks for sharing. Old thread or not, I guarantee your advice will come in handy for someone in the near future.

I also agree with you on the charcoal canister. It's something that most people probably never think to replace, but it can indeed go bad, just like anything else.

Great writeup, and thanks for the link to a replacement part. Well done @BWS!

I think I have the same problem. 3-4 times I have let my gas tank get low enough to make the gas light come on and when I fill it, I get the CEL. I did not run the code. I make sure the gas cap clicks a few times when I put it back on. Light is always out the next day. But I was in the red tonight and put 11 gals in and the light came on. Could it be the gas cap??

I believe a faulty gas cap can also cause the P0441 error code. Get a new cap and see what happens. That was not the problem for me, however. Good luck and report back if you make any progress.

Recently bought a '04 LJ from out of state that I had to replace some emissions equipment to get to pass smog here in AZ, evap I/M monitor
and P0441 code pending was the last thing that I had to clear up, while researching P0441, this is the second thread I found with a picture of un upside down
purge valve, sure enough mine was installed upside down! Coincidence??? Unscrupulous mechanics looking for easy return fixes?

I going to put this down right here for the next guy with a P0441 code. I have a 97 Jeep Wrangler TJ with a 4.0. I have owned the vehicle this whole time. And first time getting code P0441
So some quick troubleshooting I did. disconnected line from charcoal canister to purge valve solenoid as well as electrical connector left line to intake still hooked up. With electrical connector disconnected the valve should stay closed. I started vehicle and put a wet finger over port on purge valve that had line from canister hooked to. If you feel suction on your finger, the valve is stuck open. And is bad. Since I had a Disconnected. I went ahead and remove the charcoal canister. And flipped it upside down and with a little shake I got some charcoal in the palm of my hand. So I will be ordering new canister with purge valve.

Let us know which one you use...I think there are two Dorman units that are bigger and smaller. Lots of reports of mixed success.

I have a 97 too and it's one of the few parts I have not touched or replaced.

Thanks!

I ordered the Duralast VC120 vapor canister from autozone. Factory OEM canister has been discontinued and people are saying good reviews with this replacement. I did find OEM purge valve solenoid on MoparPartsGaint.com
P/N4669475AB. Won’t get either until next weekend.

You lost me at Duralast...I've used and regretted purchasing some of their parts...but as with everything they don't source parts with one supplier...so definitely interested in how it turns out!

Thanks for this post. I just tried this, and found that with the purge valve solenoid's electrical connection unplugged, I was still getting constant suction in the line that leads from the solenoid to the canister. So this means that my purge valve solenoid is bad, yes?

Tried attaching a video, but the site doesn't seem to like .MOV files. Pic below shows where I get constant suction.

If that is the line going to purge valve. And the electrical connector is disconnected and you have suction. Yes the purge valve is bad. (Stuck open). I would check your canister as well and make sure no charcoal is falling out. I have posted part# for the parts I used. And since the remove and replaced parts. I have not had the code come back as of today.

Got it, thanks.

I checked the canister previously/recently. Seems to be in good shape. Just ordered a new purge valve solenoid.

Thanks again.
